The grate is formed with a plurality of diagonally running grate members on opposing sides of gaps therebetween. A centrally located exhaust housing has curved sidewalls forming an elliptical shape of the exhaust housing. Exhaust openings running along the elliptically curved sidewalls communicate negative pressure to recessed air flowpaths in the gaps to remove smoke with an air filter.
