  • Publication number: 20060176175
Abstract: A sensing system for sensing conditions or characteristics associated with a process or thing. The sensing system includes one or more energy converters and a sensor, which are coupled to the process or thing. A node is coupled to the sensor and the energy-converter, and the node is powered by output from the energy converter. In a more specific embodiment, the node includes a controller that implements one or more routines for selectively powering a wireless transmitter of the node based on a predetermined condition. The predetermined condition may specify that sensor output values are within a predetermined range or are below or above a predetermined threshold. Alternatively, the predetermined condition may specify that electrical energy output from the energy converter is below a predetermined threshold. A remote computer may be wirelessly connected to node and may include software and/or hardware that is adapted to process information output by the sensor and relayed to the computer via the node.

  • Patent number: 7042985
Abstract: A method for providing a regional E911 edge network. The method includes assigning public safety answering points (PSAPs) to ports located in a telephone network, where each of the ports is associated with a calling party number (CPN) and a geographic location. The method also includes identifying an incoming emergency call from an IP device. The IP device corresponds to a unique machine access code address and the incoming emergency call includes an incoming CPN. The entry port associated with the IP device is determined based on the unique machine access code address and the incoming CPN. The incoming emergency call is connected to the PSAP corresponding to the entry port. The CPN and the geographic location data are transmitted to the PSAP corresponding to the entry port.

  • Publication number: 20050252080
Abstract: This invention provides a container and associated growing process that promotes the growth of at least two different, specialized types of roots and that provides the optimal conditions for these two types of roots. In particular, the container defines an upper section that promotes growth of a fine intricate web of roots that is surrounded by an organic, non-organic or mixed organic and non-organic nutrient-rich medium. This upper section is separated by a permeable medium divider that allows predetermined quantities of water to pass into the upper section (to maintain desired moisture in the nutrient medium (soil), while a lower/bottom section contains a reservoir of hydroponic water that may be relatively free of any nutrients (e.g. “non-nutrient” water). Extending from the upper root ball are a series of water-drinking straw-like roots that transpire water directly from the non-nutrient reservoir and that are continually exposed to massive amounts of atmospheric oxygen.

  • Patent number: 6944779
Abstract: A multimedia/personal computer-based system for operating information, communication, and entertainment devices in a mobile vehicle uses a power management strategy which reduces power consumption and boot-up time in a manner which facilitates use of a complex instruction set computing (CISC) processor system. A power management fault strategy detects fault conditions and restores proper operation without user intervention. A low power microprocessor off-board of the main motherboard switches a plurality of regulated voltages to the main motherboard and other devices. The main application microprocessor on the main motherboard sends periodic status messages to the low power microprocessor. Various strategies are provided for limiting attempts to correct a fault, monitor the state of the application microprocessor, and transition between states.
