  • Publication number: 20230025547
Abstract: According to an example embodiment, an apparatus for wind speed measurement is provided, the apparatus comprising: a pressure sensor arranged to provide a pressure sensor signal that is descriptive of an instantaneous air pressure; a wind shield arranged to prevent a direct airflow from the environment of the apparatus to the pressure sensor; and a processing unit for deriving, based on the pressure sensor signal, one or more wind speed characteristics that are descriptive of the wind speed at a predefined reference measurement height.

  • Patent number: 10078156
Abstract: A technique for characterizing precipitation includes receiving an impedance signal that is indicative of the impedance in a predetermined area on a measurement surface, deriving, on basis of the impedance signal, a first precipitation rate that is descriptive of accumulated mass of precipitation particles falling on the predetermined area during a calculation period, receiving an acoustic signal that is indicative of acoustic impacts caused by the precipitation particles in vicinity of the measurement surface, deriving, on basis of the acoustic signal, a second precipitation rate that is descriptive of accumulated mass of the precipitation particles during the calculation period, and designating, in response to receiving an indication regarding a presence of precipitation, current precipitation type as one of predetermined precipitation types at least in part on basis of a first precipitation indicator value derived on basis of the first and second precipitation rates.

  • Publication number: 20090120179
Abstract: The invention relates to a precipitation weighing gauge, comprising a frame (1), a load cell (2) mounted on the frame (1), a collector bucket (3) mounted on the load cell (2), either directly or using a separate weighing platform (18), a funnel element (5) adapted to rest on the collector bucket (3) during measurement, and a jacket (4) connected to the frame (1) and surrounding the collector bucket (3). According to the invention to the jacket (4) is mounted an orifice element (7) including a spraying device (8) for spraying liquid in order to melt ice or snow from the orifice (7), the funnel (5) or the collector bucket (3) surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5434778
Abstract: A method and apparatus measuring prevailing weather and meteorological visibility. According to the method an optical scattering-type measurement instrument is used for determining the apparent volume of precipitation in a measurement space. The apparent volume of precipitation is measured in measurement space having a volume of less than 0.2 liters, and simultaneously with this measurement of apparent volume of precipitation, also the water quantity related to the measurement space is measured. The implementation makes it possible to determine both the type and rate of precipitation.
