  • Patent number: 9401744
Abstract: A user can initiate the transmission of data on a mobile device by making physical contact with another device. The physical contact can be any type of physical touch that is referred to as a “tap” or “tapping.” When a tap is detected by a device, the device may initiate near field communication (NFC) with the other tapping device. NFC may be used to communicate data between the two devices, or NFC may be used to exchange sufficient information to allow the devices to establish a communication channel via another communication link. In some embodiments, an NFC-enabled mobile device can be used to gather group data relating to users having mobile devices that are within NFC range of one another and which initiate the aggregation of group data by the tapping of three or more devices.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 22, 2014
Date of Patent: July 26, 2016
    Assignee: T-Mobile USA, Inc.
Inventors: Georgiana Gormley, Winston Wang, Robert Buck, Valerie Goulart, Jeff Gough, Barb Brindle, Patrick Carney, Paulo Chow

  • Patent number: 8925042
Abstract: An intermediary device may be used to connect a telecommunications device to an existing secure network that is accessed by a computing device. The intermediary device may simplify connections to the secure network by connecting to the secure network without setting up a new connection to the secure network. The telecommunications device may connect to the computing device, via the intermediary device, using a secondary network, which enables the telecommunications device to access the secure network through the computing device. In some instances, the computing device may operate to bridge a connection with the telecommunications device and perform some or all of the functions of the intermediary device.

  • Patent number: 8340637
Abstract: In some embodiments, a user may associate a first communication type (e.g., Wi-Fi calling application) with a second communication type (e.g., standard ten-digit mobile telephone number), so that the user may have calls directed to an active communication type in a predetermined preference. In various embodiments, communication devices may become available (e.g., initiated) based on an activity of the user, such as by a location or proximity of the user, use of a device by the user, or for other reasons.
