  • Publication number: 20240126368
Abstract: An eye tracking system for a head-mounted devices includes an interference pattern emitter, an interference pattern detector, and processing logic. The interference pattern emitter provides at least two light beams that combine into a light pattern in an eyebox region of the head-mounted device. The light pattern includes an interference pattern based on constructive and destructive interference of the at least two light beams. The light detector is configured to detect a portion of the light pattern and provides detector data that is representative of one or more light intensities in the portion of the light pattern. The processing logic is coupled to the light detector to receive the detector data and is configured to identify displacement characteristics of the interference pattern. The processing logic is configured to determine orientation characteristics of an eye in the eyebox region based on the displacement characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20230333382
Abstract: According to examples, an optical assembly for a head-mounted display (HMD) device may include a compensation element to modify a phase of a first light arriving from an environment outside the head-mounted display (HMD) device; a transparent display to present an image or a video and to pass through the phase-modified first light; and a focus element to focus the phase-modified first light and a second light from the transparent display on an eyebox. The optical assembly may reduce one or more aberrations in the first light or the second light. The focus element may be a metalens, a light field lens, a solid optical lens, or an optical configuration with two optical elements including an air gap between the two optical elements. The compensation element may be a free-form phase plate.

  • Publication number: 20230221555
Abstract: A transmissive optical element includes first and second reflective volumetric gratings that redirect an impinging light beam in a first wavelength range from the first grating to the second grating by reflective diffraction, and from the second grating out of the transmissive optical element, also by reflective diffraction. Such a configuration enables the transmissive optical element to transmit a light cone in a second, different wavelength range substantially without redirecting the light cone, while redirecting the impinging light beam at the same time. The transmissive optical element may be used in a visual display e.g. to separate paths of image light in visible part of light spectrum and some service light in a different part of the light spectrum.

  • Publication number: 20230221568
Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatuses for an eye tracking system to track eye movement via a camera and lens module utilizing a low-profile phase element, such as a holographic optical element (HOE), or a multipurpose sensor are provided. Systems and methods may include a multipurpose sensor to detect changes in light and determine occurrence of eye movement, a lens module (e.g., waveguide) configured to project an image covering a first field of view within an eye relief zone, to a camera positioned adjacent to the lens module and configured to track eye movements within a second field of view, and a low-profile phase element positioned in front of the camera. Light reflected from the user's eyes is transmitted via lens module to the camera which responds to eye reflection data of the second field of view. Systems and apparatuses for a calibration system to perform key performance indicator testing for eye tracking systems are provided.

  • Publication number: 20230084541
Abstract: An optical assembly to enable distortion compensation and enhanced image clarity is provided. The optical assembly may include an optical stack, such as pancake optics. The optical assembly may also include at least two optical elements. The optical assembly may further include at least one spatially located, free form optical component between the at least two optical elements, wherein the spatially located, free form optical component provides distortion compensation and enhanced image clarity. In some examples, the spatially located, free form optical component may have a plurality of regions having different diffraction designs. In some examples, , the spatially located, free form optical component may also utilize a curvature (i.e., may have a curved surface) to implement a phase change profile that may provide distortion compensation.
