Abstract: A communications system includes a subnetwork connected to a network. The network has a first part and a second part, with the first and second parts being connected so that a first user can communicate with a second user. The first user is able to move within the respective part of the system. The subsystem includes a gateway for permitting communications between first and second parts. The gateway includes a register for storing information associating the first and second users, and for storing information relating to the current location of the first user so that information from the second user can be directed to the first user.

Abstract: A method of transmitting voice over IP (VoIP) in a wireless telecommunications system comprising at least one wireless mobile station, a first radio access gateway and a second radio access gateway. Address information of the second radio access gateway is defined in the first radio access gateway, if a need is detected to hand over the connection of the mobile station from a base station connected to the first radio access gateway to a base station connected to the second radio access gateway. Address information of the first radio access gateway is defined in the second radio access gateway. Data addressed to and transmitted from the mobile station is transferred through the first radio access gateway and the second radio access gateway when the handover has been performed to the base station connected to the second radio access gateway.

Abstract: A telecommunications system comprising: a first base station and a second base station, both capable of communicating by radio with a first terminal unit; a telecommunications network capable of coupling the first base station to a second terminal unit over a first route and capable of coupling the second base station to the second terminal unit over a second route, whereby traffic data may be communicated between the first terminal unit and the second terminal unit via the first base station or the second base station; and a routing unit for determining whether the first terminal unit is to communicate with the second terminal unit via the first and second base stations in dependence on factors that include quality of at least part of the first and second routes.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for identifying, compiling, deploying, managing, de-deploying, or some combination thereof, mobility components in a managed application server platform [e.g. J2EE environment] by instantiating a mobility profile in the application server for making common mobile functionality available to mobility specific components. The result of applying this method is an instance of mobility profile that allows applying mobility specific functionalities in the server side with a similar manner that has been provided with other managed containers. The invention builds on an observation that mobility specific capabilities share some common functionality and then some component specific added value functionalities.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for permitting mobile communications between a Mobile Services Switching Center (MSC) and a Mobile Station (MS) and between MSs by establishing for each transaction, including a call, an Internet Protocol (IP) connection in an IP network. In the invention a call to a MS is initiated by sending from the MSC to the MS, via the IP network, a call initiation message causing the MS to send a response message which includes a mobile identity that can be used as a session identifier identifying the MS. Responsive to the response message, the MSC sends a call set up message to establish an IP connection in the IP network upon which a transaction including the call is to be conducted. The call set up message includes a transaction ID which identifies the transaction. The IP network stores the transaction ID and maps the transaction ID with respect to the session identifier and the IP connection to be established.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for performing cell selection in a packet radio communication system, such as a WIO (wireless intranet office) system. Indications of the quality of communications through a packet data network to which a base transceiver station is coupled is provided to a mobile terminal. When the mobile terminal is positioned at a location in which the mobile terminal can camp-on a selected one of more than one base transceiver stations, determination of which of the more than one base transceiver stations to which the mobile terminal should camp-on is made responsive, at least in part, to values of the quality of the packet data network.
