  • Patent number: 6494823
Abstract: A take-out roll, spreader roll or equivalent roll for a web-like material having three parts linked with one another, namely, a middle part and two end parts, one on each side of the middle part. The middle part and end parts are pivotal with respect to one another for the purpose of bending the roll into a desired curved shape. The middle part is constructed to operate as a revolving axle of the roll which is mounted revolvingly on support members by end bearings. The end parts are mounted in the area of their axial inner ends on the middle part by articulation devices. The end parts are further mounted in the area of their axial outer ends, revolvingly and movably in a radial direction on support parts which are separated from the revolving parts of the roll by bearings arranged inward of the end bearings in the axial direction of the roll.

  • Patent number: 6481275
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring the tension of a moving web. In the invention, a measuring beam (2)is curved so that a web moving over or under the measuring beam (2) forms an air cushion (3) of the air it transports between the measuring beam (2) and the web (1). The web (1) causes a force effect transmitted by the air cushion on the measuring beam (2). The tension of the web (1) is measured by measuring the force caused by the web (1) and transmitted by the measuring beam (2).

  • Patent number: 6203668
Abstract: A device for fastening a roll to the frame construction in a paper machine, paper finishing machine, or equivalent, wherein the ends of the roll are provided with bearings. The bearing housings of the bearings, or fastening bases formed onto the bearing housings, are mounted against a back-up face formed on the frame construction so as to position the roll in its place on the machine frame. On the machine frame, fastening members are arranged to be displaceable in a direction substantially perpendicular to and against the back-up face formed on the frame construction and include flange portions, i.e., shoulders or equivalent formed pieces. Correspondingly, the bearing housings, or fastening bases arranged thereon, are provided with grooves corresponding to the shape of the flange portions of the fastening members. When the roll is installed in its place, the flange portions pass into the grooves in the bearing housings.

  • Patent number: 6171223
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a calendar roll in which a continuous band of filler material is wound onto an axle until a desired diameter for the roll is obtained, and then an elastic coating is applied to an outermost surface of the band, i.e., the outermost layer of windings. An adhesive agent may be applied onto the band such that adjacent windings of the band adhere to one another during winding of the band onto the axle. Adjacent windings of the band in an uppermost layer of windings may be welded together to provide a foundation for the elastic coating. The calender roll includes an axle, a uniform and continuous band of filler material wound onto the axle to provide the roll with a desired diameter, and an elastic polymer coating arranged on an outermost layer of windings of the band on the axle.

  • Patent number: 6158501
Abstract: A thermally insulated thermoroll including a shaft supported by bearings with at least one longitudinal shaft channel defined in the shaft for passing a heating medium. A flange with radial bores is connected to the shaft and a shell, with at least one longitudinal shell channel for passing the heating medium, is connected to the flange such that the flange is interposed between the shaft and the shell. Together the shaft, flange and shell form a main body of the thermoroll. At least one first insulating wall and at least one second insulating wall are disposed in the main body of the thermoroll. The first and second insulating walls being joined at respective ends to form at least one hermetically sealed insulated cavity in the main body of the thermoroll. These insulating walls may be disposed around the shaft channel and/or the shell channel to thermally insulate the shaft and/or the shell.

  • Patent number: 5806415
Abstract: A method for quick-opening a set of rolls in a calender, in particular a supercalender, in which a paper or board web to be calendered is passed through calendering nips formed by a variable-crown top roll, a variable-crown bottom roll and by two or more intermediate rolls arranged between the top and bottom rolls. The rolls are arranged to form a substantially vertical stack of rolls, and the intermediate rolls are supported by the use of hydraulic relief cylinders so as to relieve the nip load produced by the mass of the bearing housings of the intermediate rolls and auxiliary devices associated therewith. During the quick-opening of the set of rolls, the bottom roll of the set of rolls is lowered and the relief pressures in the hydraulic relief cylinders are discharged so as to open the calendering nips.

  • Patent number: 5524532
Abstract: In the inventive method and apparatus for calendering a surface of a paper or board web, a temperature difference is created between the web surfaces so that the surface to be calendered is cooler than the opposite surface. In addition, moisture within the web is transferred using the so-called heat pipe effect toward the cooler surface while substantially preventing evaporation of moisture from the web so as to create a predetermined moisture profile transversely through the web and decrease the glass transition temperature of the web at the relatively cooler surface to be calendered. Finally, the web having the predetermined moisture profile is advanced into the calendering nip so that the relatively cooler and moister surface of the web is pressed against the heated roll of the nip to thereby calender that web surface.
