  • Patent number: 5685376
Abstract: It is possible to more effectively extinguish fires in confined spaces such as engine rooms of ships. General nozzles are disposed above and/or on the sides of the confined space to be protected for general fire extinguishment in the confined space. Spot nozzles may be disposed around specific objects which are susceptible to fire in the confined space, such as engines in an engine room. At least some of the nozzles are low pressure nozzles having wings from which extinguishing water is sprayed at a pressure less than twelve bar, e.g., between 2-12 bar, having water droplets of various size. Due to rotating action of the wings, the water droplets are distributed in the water spray so that the frequency of drops having larger diameters is greater at the periphery of the water spray than in the inner part of the spray, and correspondingly, the frequency of drops having smaller diameters is greater in the inner part of the spray than at the periphery.

  • Patent number: 5513149
Abstract: Underwater sound from a marine vessel driven by one or more propellers is damped by introducing air and/or other gas into the vessel's propeller flow(s) so that the turbulence of the propeller flow(s) causes mixing of the air/gas and water and disintegration of gas bubbles. The majority of the gas bubbles formed in the water are from 1 to 20 mm in diameter.

  • Patent number: 5403216
Abstract: A main propulsion arrangement for a high power ship or the like comprises an underwater drive unit connected to and turnable by a substantially vertical tubular shaft journalled in the ship. The drive unit and the tubular shaft define a hollow casing enclosing an electrical propulsion motor connected to a propeller shaft, which is connected to a driving propeller external of the casing. The casing is, at its inside, supported by several mainly vertical web plates, which are arranged to act, in combination, as elements structurally stiffening and supporting the casing, as elements securing the propulsion motor in place relative to the casing, as elements transmitting to the casing reaction forces to the torque developed by the propulsion motor, and as wall elements of ducts for incoming and outgoing gaseous coolant for the propulsion motor.

  • Patent number: 5050283
Abstract: An arrangement for handling a drilling equipment comprising clamping jaws (11a, 11b) mounted rotatably with respect to the axis of a drill tube (8a, 8b) and a breaking device (7) mounted rotatably about the axis of the drill tube (8a, 8b) and movably in the longitudinal direction of a feed beam (3), which breaking device can be connected to the drill tube (8a, 8b) or the like unrotatably with respect thereto. To move the drill tube (8a, 8b) or the like to the drilling position and away from it, respectively, the breaking device (7) is mounted turnably about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the feed beam (3), which makes it possible to push the horizontal tube (8b) or the like into the breaking device (7) turned to the direction transverse to the feed beam (3) and to fasten it to the breaking device, after which the tube (8b) can be turned into a drilling center between a rotating mechanism (5) and the previous drill tube (8a) by moving the breaking device (7) along the feed beam (3).

  • Patent number: 4971158
Abstract: In a rotary drilling apparatus, a rotary head is advanced against an object to be drilled and a neck element included in the rotary head and connected with drilling member is rotated around its longitudinal axis relative to a rotary head body. The neck element is subjected, in a normal drilling situation to the action of two oppositely-directed forces produced by means of a pressure medium, the first force acting in the drilling direction and the second force acting in the direction opposite to the drilling direction, the first force being greater and the difference between the forces producing a feeding force. The neck element is movable in the direction of the feeding force. In a drilling situation, when the force acting in the direction opposite to the feeding force is greater than the feeding force, the neck element moves in the direction opposite to the drilling direction relative to the rotary head body.

  • Patent number: 4934465
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for the axial bearing of the drilling machine. The drilling machine thereby comprises a body (6), a percussion device (1) fitted in the body, and a rotation bushing (3) functioning as a rotating means of a shank (2) positioned on an axial extension of the percussion device. Furthermore, an axial bearing is fitted within the body (6) for receiving the axial forces exerted on the body (6) through the shank (2). In order to provide resilience, the axial bearing is arranged to be displaceable in the axial direction under the influence of a pressure medium acting thereon. To resiliently receive a percussion impulse reflected from the rock during the drilling process, the pressure and volume flow of the pressure medium of the axial bearing is adjustable so that the position (Y) of the axial bearing is between the extreme positions (0,.DELTA.X) of the axial bearing under the normal operating conditions of the drilling machine.

  • Patent number: 4736806
Abstract: Continuously revolving percussion drilling machine, which comprises a body (1), a drill shank (2) mounted rotatably and axially slidably in the body for causing impacts on the drill rod, an impact mechanism (3) positioned in the body for causing axial impacts on the drill shank, and a rotating device (4) for rotating the drill shank around its axis. The drill shank is provided with a toothing (8), which is coupled in direct engagement with a toothing (9) revolving in relation to the drill shank and rotating the drill shank, said toothing of the drill shank being axially displaceable in relation to said rotating toothing, so that the contact surfaces of the teeth of the toothing on the drill shank and of the toothing rotating the drill shank revolve and are exchanged constantly. The teeth operate cold and well lubricated. The rotating toothing may be a cogwheel or a tooth rim.

  • Patent number: 4702187
Abstract: The invention relates to a ship that is adapted for operating in ice-filled waters and has a general frame form defining a substantially horizontal bottom surface, two side surfaces, a stern and a blow portion that breaks the ice advantageously. The bottom surface comprises one or a greater number of cavities, extending to or located on both sides of the longitudinal symmetry plane of the ship, in which cavity or cavities there are arranged movable sheetlike elements. The sheetlike elements have a first position, in which said elements form a generally continuous part of the bottom surface, and a second position, in which said elements form, below the bottom surface, a substantially vertical wedge-shaped structure that converges in the direction from the stern of the hull towards the bow of the hull. The elements are provided with power units which bring about movement of the elements from one position to another by turning around a swivelling axis arranged in the longitudinal direction of the elements.
