    Abstract: A thermoplastic polyolefin alloy having high (notched) Izod impact strength and process for its preparation are disclosed. The alloys of this invention comprises of a polypropylene block copolymer as a base polymer, an elastomer, a compatibilizer and optionally a natural filler and is prepared by melt blending a twin-screw extruder (or Buss-co-kneader) the above ingredients. The polyolefin alloys of this invention exhibit very high (notched) Izod impact strength of 60 to 90 kg. cm/cm, flexural modulus of 6,000 to 8,000 kg/cm2, tensile strength at yield of 150 to 200 kg/cm2, and heat deflection temperature of 60 to 70° C. with 4.6 kgf stress. The alloys also possess melt flow index of 2-5 g/10 min. when tested according to ASTM D1238 and allow injection molding, compression molding, thermoforming and other conventional techniques to be applied for making end products that demand high impact strength.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic polyolefin blend comprising of a base polymer and up to 25% by wt of an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), the balance if any consisting of a conventional filler and/or a conventional compatibilizer or interfacial agent is disclosed. The blend of the present invention is prepared by extruding a base polymer with ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) at a temperature in the range of from 150 to 230° C. The blends of the invention exhibit very high mechanical properties at moderate concentrations of EPDM and/or filler, and can be made into industrial pallets either by injection molding or by thermoforming.

The blend comprises an intimate mixture of polypropylene copolymer, EPDM and other additives and exhibits suitable flow properties as well as mechanical properties (such as melt flow index: 10-15 g/10 minutes; flexural modulus: 8000-15000 kg/cm2; (notched Izod impact strength: 50-60 kg.cm/cm; and heat deflection temperature: 60-105° C.) necessary for injection molding of car bumpers as well as their property requirements. It is prepared by extruding the components in a twin screw extruder or a Buss co-kneader all together or in separate batches, while for example, the twin screw temperature is maintained in the range of 180 to 250° C. and the screws are rotated at a speed of 50 to 100 rpm.
