The method comprises the following steps of: a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) calculating a high definition video code stream format according to video conference control information, and sending a capability set containing the high definition video code stream format to a selected terminal; based on the high definition video code stream format in the capability set, the selected terminal encoding a high definition video image and sending the encoded high definition video code stream to the MCU; according to the video conference control information, the MCU synthesizing the received high definition video code stream image into multiple pictures, and obtaining the high definition multi-picture video code stream image and sending it to the terminals attending the conference.
