  • Patent number: 8662716
Abstract: A condensing element includes an outer section having a circumferential curved sidewall extending between a light input surface at one end and a light output surface at the other end that provides substantially total internal reflection of light emitted from the input surface and incident upon the sidewall of the outer section. A circumferential curved inner section is recessed within the outer section such that the light emitted from the input surface and incident upon the curved inner section is not incident upon the output surface. A circumferential substantially non-curved sidewall extends from the inner section to a circumferential substantially non-curved upper section positioned at approximately a 45° angle relative to the optical axis of the light emitted from the input surface. A light-absorbing plug is in communication with the upper section, wherein the light emitted from the input surface is condensed and directed in a sideways direction relative to the optical axis of the entering light.

  • Patent number: 8235556
Abstract: A condensing element, array, and methods thereof include a bowl-shaped outer section and a lens-shaped inner section. The outer section provides substantially total internal reflection of light entering at an input surface of the outer section. The inner section is recessed within the outer section at a distance from the entering light that is within the focal position of the inner section. The outer and inner sections are configured in a preferred embodiment so that substantially all the light exiting the condensing element is substantially parallel to the optical axis of the entering light. In an alternate embodiment, the configuration of the condensing element can be modified to selectively adjust the desired degree of collimation of the exiting light.

  • Patent number: 8226262
Abstract: A TIRing condensing element and methods thereof includes a first section and a second section. The first section provides substantially total internal reflection of light entering at a base of the first section. The second section tapers from a first section towards an optical axis of the element extending through the second section to output light from the first section. The first and second sections are configured so a half-power angle of the light output from the second section is less than the half-power angle of the light entering the first section.

  • Patent number: 7980727
Abstract: A TIRing condensing array includes a plurality of condensing elements with at least one of the condensing elements having a first section and a second section. The first section provides substantially total internal reflection of light entering at a base of the first section. The second section tapers from the first section towards an optical axis extending through the first and second sections. The first and second sections are configured so a half-power angle of the light output from the second section is less than the half-power angle of the light entering the first section. At least one of the condensing elements is optically and mechanically connected to at least one other of the condensing elements at an attachment area between the condensing elements.

  • Publication number: 20100157590
Abstract: A condensing element system and method thereof includes a first section for each of one or more condensing elements and a second section for each of the one or more condensing elements. The first section for each of one or more condensing elements provides substantially total internal reflection of light entering at a base of the first section. Each of the second sections is optically coupled to one of the first sections and has an output surface with one or more peaks and one or more troughs. The first and second sections for each of the condensing elements are each configured so a half-power angle of the light output from the second section is less than the half-power angle of the light entering the first section.
