  • Patent number: 7288291
Abstract: A film is formed on a planar surface by applying a granular layer on the planar surface by using electrostatic forces, and then finishing the granular layer to form the film. A converting line may be rebuilt to have devices employing this method. A multilayer sheet-like product comprising a film layer may be produced.

  • Patent number: 7147754
Abstract: A system for maintaining calender rolls of a paper machine clean when producing high-gloss paper or coated paper, such as LWC or MWC. To prevent a coating agent, such as coating dye, from adhering onto and soiling a smooth surface of a calender roll, with an overheating phenomenon, the system has a second measurement station (10) provided with measuring and indicator means for producing an output indicating soiledness of the web (W) or a humidity profile. When the output of the second measurement station (10) indicates excessive soiledness or an uneven humidity profile, the system performs at least one of: cleaning the surface of the smooth-surfaced calender roll; changing the nip load in the calender (5); making a correction adjustment of the CD-directional humidity profile of the web (W); cutting the web (W) and conducting it into the pulper; and/or changing the running speed of the web (W).

  • Publication number: 20050123678
Abstract: The surface of a continuous web, the fibrous portion of which consists of papermaking fibres, is coated with a coating powder. The web is allowed to move between electrodes, which are in different potentials. A coating powder of inorganic material and polymeric binder material is applied on the surface of the web by utilizing the difference in the electric potential. The coated surface of the web is then finished. The coating powder comprises 10.1-99.5 wt.-% of inorganic material. A dry surface treated sheet material is thus formed.

  • Publication number: 20050089641
Abstract: A method and assemby is disclosed for manufacturing a two-layer coated paper web, the method comprising the steps of applying a coating furnish layer to at least one surface of said paper web, drying the applied coating furnish layer to a point allowing a next coating layer to be applied thereon. Onto the first coating layer is applied a second coating layer that is dried. The application of successive coating layers is continued until the desired coat thickness is attained. The coating layers are applied using a metering film transfer method operating without leveling of the applied coating layer by doctoring, whereby in at least one of said coating layers is used a furnish having a solids content of not less than 62%.

  • Publication number: 20050008785
Abstract: A coating slip is applied to a first surface (SA) of a moving paper or board web using a gravity-based application method, the web's (W) direction of travel is turned by 120-200°, then a coating slip is applied to a second surface (SB) of the web using a gravity-based application method, and both sides (SA, SB) of the web are dried. The coating applicators include application beams (11, 16), which are located above the web and which have a supply gap or supply holes to pour out the coating slip with the aid of gravity on to the surface to be coated.

  • Publication number: 20040060676
Abstract: The present invention relates a method for the manufacture of paper, in particular of coated fine paper, in which method paper stock is fed from a headbox (100) to a wire section (200) in which water is drained from a paper web (W), in which method the paper web (W) is passed from the wire section (200) to a press section (300) to press water out of the paper web (W), and in which method, after the press section (300), the paper web (W) is dried in a dryer section (400), precalendered and coated in a coating station (600), after which the paper web (W) is dried in a drying section (650) and calendered in a final calender (900), and reeled in a reel-up (1000). In the method the stock is fed into the headbox (100) using multilayering technology, the paper web (W) is precalendered in a one or more reinforced-nip calender (500), the paper web (W) is coated in a film coating unit.

  • Patent number: 6712931
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a paper or board web in which stock is fed from a headbox (100) to a wire section (200), in which water is removed from the web (W) and from which the web (W) is passed to a press section (300), in which water is pressed out of the web (W) and after which the web (W) is dried in a dryer section (400) and reeled by means of a reel-up (800). According to the invention, additives, fillers and/or fines are fed into the stock of the surface layers of the web (W) in order to reduce the pore size distribution of the web in the surface layers so as to substantially correspond to a precoated web. The invention also relates to a paper or board machine which is characterized in that it is structured for enabling the feeding of additives, fillers and/or fines into a fiber stock such that an uncoated web substantially corresponds in its properties to a precoated web.

  • Patent number: 6699362
Abstract: Fine paper is manufactured in a paper machine by feeding stock into a headbox (100) from a short circulation the stock volume of which has been minimized, water is removed from the paper web (W) most advantageously in a gap former (250), in the press section (300) water is pressed out of the paper web (W) in an extended nip press (360), in the dryer section (400) impingement drying (450) is employed for the drying of the paper web (W), the paper web (W) is pre-calendered in a calender (900) employing low nip loads, both surfaces of the paper web (W) are precoated at the same time, after precoating (500) the paper web (W) is dried by means of contact-free drying (660), the paper web (W) is coated in an on-line coating station/stations (700, 800), after which the paper web (W) is at least partly dried in a drying section/sections (750, 850) by means of contact-free drying of the paper web (W), and the paper web (W) is calendered in an on-line calender (900) while the linear load in each nip is regulated separat

  • Patent number: 5762284
Abstract: When a new roll is changed in an off-machine coating line into the unwinder, problems are encountered in matching the tension of the web received from the expiring roll to that to be paid off from the new roll. Differences in web tension cause web breaks during roll change. To avoid this, the web is supported at the unwinder, and subsequently, at the following dryer cylinder group by a support felt that equalizes differences in web tension. The web received from the first roll is spliced to the tail of a second, full roll by pressing the web received from the first roll against the web of the second roll via the support felt by a splicing roll. Next, the web is fed supported by the felt to a dryer cylinder group including VAC and steam cylinders where the damp web is dried for subsequent coating.
