  • Publication number: 20030050097
Abstract: An enhanced radio network controller (RNC) node of a radio access network stores context information for a user equipment unit which is in a Connected Mode, and initiates a cell update-prompting message which is transmitted the user equipment unit. The stored context information is used by the context-enhanced radio network controller (RNC) node for addressing the cell update-prompting message to the user equipment unit. After the user equipment unit (which is in its Connected Mode) performs the prompted cell update procedure, such user equipment unit (UE) can be paged with a conventional paging message. The invention with its context-enhanced radio network controller (RNC) node is particularly suitable to user equipment units which are in a critical state of the Connected Mode, such as (for example) either a CELL_PCH state or a URA_PCH state of the Connected Mode.

  • Publication number: 20030003919
Abstract: Existing control plane protocol procedure(s) are employed to provide a SRNS relocation procedure to relocate a SRNS function from a source radio network controller (261) to a target radio network controller (262), even though a direct transport bearer (100) had previously been used between the source radio network controller and the Node-B. In example implementations, the existing control plane protocol procedure includes at least one of a NBAP procedure and a RNSAP procedure. In one mode of the invention, performance of the SRNS relocation procedure comprises a relocation request communicating step; a new transport bearer establishing step; a relocation triggering step; and a bearer switching step. In the relocation request communication step, the target radio network controller is notified that a relocation of the SRNS function is requested. In the new transport bearer establishing step, a new transport bearer is established between the target radio network controller and the Node-B.

  • Patent number: 6473442
Abstract: A communications system and method are provided that enables the balancing and rate matching of different types of services used simultaneously by a mobile terminal. More specifically, the communications system includes a network and mobile terminal either of which is capable of matching the bit rates of a plurality of transport channels each handling a service to a bit rate of a physical channel handling multiplexed services using relative offset measures and predefined rules. The network assigns and signals the relative offset measures to the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6363058
Abstract: A method for processing multiple data services over a communications link between a mobile station and a base station is disclosed. A RLC/MAC protocol layer of the communications link between a mobile station and a base station receives a plurality of radio bearer services each including at least one service provided by the mobile station. The plurality of radio bearer services are processed in such a manner that services having substantially similar quantity of signal requirements are combined for transmission on a single logical channel. Data within the transmission blocks may be prioritized to enable flexible control of transmission rates.

  • Patent number: 6307867
Abstract: An optimal data block size is determined for use in transmitting data at variable rates over a communications link in predetermined time intervals, where each predetermined time interval has the same time duration. Rather than varying data block size according to changes in transmission rates, which adds unnecessary complexity, the data blocks all have the same fixed size, i.e., the same number of data bits in each block. That fixed data block size is determined so that for all of the available data transmission rates, each predetermined time interval is fully occupied with useful information. The fixed data block size is determined based on a maximum frequency at which the transmission rate may change on the communications link and a lowest available transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6298095
Abstract: In a cellular communication system that has a tight reuse pattern, a method for transmitting bursts containing interleaved and non-interleaved data bits over RF channels assigned to a plurality of communication cells using two power levels. The bursts containing non-interleaved data bit, for example, frequency correction data bits and synchronization data bits, are transmitted using a first transmit power level, P1, and the bursts containing interleaved data bits, for example traffic data bits, are transmitted using a second transmit power level, P2, with the first transmit power level, P1, being greater than the second transmit power level, P2.

  • Patent number: 6236646
Abstract: In a spread spectrum communications system supporting bursty uplink and downlink data packet transmission telecommunications services, significant concerns exist as to the generation of unacceptable levels of interference resulting from plural and simultaneous data packet transmissions. To address this concern, the system selectively organizes an access schedule for mobile station uplink data packet transmissions and a delivery schedule for downlink data packet transmissions. For the uplink, the schedule is transmitted to plural mobile stations in a current frame, and identifies which one or ones of plural mobile stations are authorized to make an uplink data packet transmission in a next frame. Only those mobile stations scheduled with authorization to make an access in the next frame then transmit their data packets (or a portions thereof) to the base station during that next frame. On the downlink, a notification of intended delivery is communicated to destination mobile stations in a current frame.

  • Patent number: 6163524
Abstract: In spread spectrum communications, a method for allocating and re-allocating channelization codes to new and existing channels in a way that makes the maximum number of codes available at a given time for channels of different rates and different spreading factors. If re-allocations are not performed, a communication system employing the invention has a higher capacity than a system employing a random allocation strategy. The invention also reduces signaling overhead for re-allocations in comparison to a random allocation strategy because fewer re-allocations are necessary.

  • Patent number: 6108550
Abstract: The present invention relates to the reuse of a control channel in a distributed cellular radio communication system. At least one physical channel, the so called physical control channel, in the radio communication system is used for transferring logical control channels. According to the present invention the physical uplink control channel can be reused with respect to logical control channels comprising an access request. The physical downlink control channel can be reused with respect to logical control channels comprising a message that access is granted to a mobile station or a message that someone requests contact with a mobile station. According to the invention the physical uplink control channel and/or the physical downlink control channel is reused. This means that more connections per time unit may be established in the radio communication system.
