  • Patent number: 6295855
Abstract: A blank (12′) of high-ductility material is formed with closely spaced thin fins (14) using a forming tool (18) which is rotatable about a tool axis (L) and comprises a set of flat circular space-apart forming discs (19) centered on the tool axis (L) and disposed side by side at fixed intervals along the tool axis (L) and in planes perpendicular thereto. The forming tool is displaced relative to the blank (12′) at right angles to the tool axis (L) to cause the peripheral portions of the forming discs (19) during the cyclical movements of the forming tool (18) progressively to penetrate into the blank (12′) and cause blank material to flow into the gaps separating the forming discs (19) and form planar fins (14).

  • Patent number: 6105664
Abstract: A filter and heat exchanger device comprises a substantially cylindrical housing (11) accommodating a tubular heat exchanger body (31) having fins (35) on the outer side thereof and an axial through passageway (32, 33) communicating with secondary-liquid inlet and outlet ports (19, 20). A heat exchanger compartment (26) inside a cylindrical partition (28) in the housing (11) accommodates the heat exchanger body (31) and a filter compartment (27) outside the partition accommodates a filter body (30). The two compartments (26, 27) communicate with one another and form successive sections of a primary-liquid flow path extending between primary-liquid inlet and outlet ports (17, 18). An elongate opening in the partition (28) is substantially coextensive with the heat exchanger body (31) and defines a flow passage (29) which interconnects the heat exchanger and filter compartments (26, 27).

  • Patent number: 5720627
Abstract: An electrical extension particularly for use in a motor vehicle: a cylindrical cable storage container having two cables coiled therein. The cables are connected in series. The first cable is stored as a plurality of spiral turns arranged in a substantially flat disk in the bottom of the container. The second, less flexible cable is stored as a plurality of coils arranged one on top of the other against the interior wall of the container. The second cable is played out initially from the container for connection to an external power source. The first cable is connected to an electrical unit within the vehicle. The container may be stored behind the grille and under the hood of a vehicle. A operable cover sealed to and over the container may be pivoted to the hood.

  • Patent number: 5562069
Abstract: Method and adjusting device for varying the compression of an internal combustion engine with a cylinder receiving section (2) which is pivotably mounted in the crankcase section (4) of the engine supporting the crankshaft, about a tilting shaft bearing (8) on one side of the engine, to effect a variation in the engine compression. A tilting mechanism (70) acting between the crankcase section and the cylinder receiving section is arranged on the side of the engine opposite the tilting shaft bearing (8), enabling the distance between the two engine parts to be varied. A hydraulic adjusting device (76, 78) is connected to the tilting mechanism (70) for adjusting the lateral tilting of the cylinder receiving section (2) relative to the crankcase section (4).

  • Patent number: 5460784
Abstract: Device for injecting air into an exhaust system fitted with catalytic cleaner for a supercharged Otto engine, in whose intake manifold is incorporated a motor driven air compressor operating with internal compression, giving rise to the supercharging. An air bleeding duct is arranged for adjustable air bleeding from the constriction zone of the air compressor to supply this air as additional air to the catalytic cleaner. This air bleeding duct extends from a point in the constriction zone to a point in the exhaust system upstream from the catalytic cleaner. In an inlet section of the intake manifold, located upstream from the compressor, is installed an electronically controlled device for engine idle control during bleeding of the air via the air bleeding duct.

An air bleeding duct is arranged for adjustable bleeding of air from the intake manifold and to supply this air as additional air to the catalytic cleaner. • Patent number: 5435275
Abstract: An arrangement for distribution of cooling liquid in the cooling liquid jacket in an internal combustion engine having cylinders disposed in-line in the cylinder block or in a bank of cylinders of the engine. The liquid jacket includes a liquid inlet chamber at one end of the row of cylinders and a liquid outlet chamber at the same end or at the opposite end of the row of cylinders and, in the cylinder block or bank of cylinders with associated cylinder head, mutually interconnected cooling liquid spaces and ducts which communicate with those chambers. In the lower portion of the cooling jacket, a liquid distribution pipe running along the row of cylinders is inserted at one side of the row of cylinders and has at one end a liquid inlet which communicates with the liquid inlet chamber.

  • Patent number: 5335743
Abstract: A steering wheel (11) is fitted with a control (13) which, when operated in mutually independent control directions (41-45), controls the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle, as well as upward and downward gear changing, and activates one of a number of cruise control functions. The control (13) may preferably be mounted immediately adjacent to the steering wheel rim (15) on the upper side of a wheel spoke (12), so that it may readily be operated by the driver's thumb without the necessity of releasing the grip on the wheel. Thus, the control incorporates all of the most essential driving control functions. The control according to the present invention encourages the driver to select, at an early stage, those accelerator and gear-change parameters which are most advantageous to economic driving or are most suited to the prevailing traffic conditions, the control actions required involving a minimum of manual movements.

  • Patent number: 5281188
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, there is arranged a belt transmission for driving an accessory device. In this connection, deflection members are arranged so that the drive belt for its driving bears against, for example, the flywheel of the engine. The deflection members are arranged so that the area enclosed by the drive belt lies outside the area which encloses the axis of rotation of the flywheel. By virtue of the fact that consequently the drive belt can be mounted without the drive belt needing to cross the axis of rotation, the belt transmission can simply be arranged at the rear side of the engine. This means that the axial extent of the engine can be reduced.

  • Patent number: 4947810
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement for cleaning the spark plugs of an internal combustion engine automatically subsequent to the engine stopping and then, preferably, after an unsuccessful attempt to start the engine. Consequently, conditions for a successful starting attempt are made more favorable. Conditions preventing the start of an engine are often due to the presence of deposits on one of the spark plugs, these deposits preventing an ignition spark from being produced in the cylinder. The inventive method and arrangement solve this problem by burning clean the spark plugs immediately after the engine has stopped, and then preferably after the engine has failed to start. A detection means establishes whether or not the engine has started by sensing a suitable engine parameter, preferably engine speed, through a speed indicator.

  • Patent number: 4903676
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for improving the starting ability of an internal combustion engine during difficult engine starting conditions that result from cold weather or other external circumstances. Lower than normal engine starting speeds can occur during cold weather, for example. So as not to hinder an engine start, it is essential that the spark plugs be free from deposits and in their best condition. This is achieved by burning off any deposits present on spark plugs during an engine start attempt, when difficult engine starting conditions are detected. During an engine start attempt a comparison circuit ascertains whether or not one or more detected engine parameters have a lower value than in normal engine starting conditions. The comparison circuit sends a signal to the control unit controlling the ignition system, so that the control unit will initiate the generation of a plurality of sparks, instead of a single spark, at ignition time points.

  • Patent number: 4648367
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for detecting ion current in an ignition circuit included in the ignition system of an internal combustion engine, where a measuring voltage is applied to the ignition circuit and a measuring device is utilized for detecting ion current possibly present in the ignition circuit. In known solutions of this kind, it has been necessary to use comparatively expensive electronic components, usually not manufactured as standard, to protect the outside voltage source from high voltages occurring in the ignition circuit. The problems are aggravated when the prior art is applied to capacitive ignition systems.
