Abstract: A method of making an area map for a representation of local variations in the position of a geoid which have an amplitude of less than about one meter and are caused by density variations in the underlying sea floor. The map or representation is intended primarily for use in the determination of areas of the sea floor with increased probability of deposits of natural resources such as oil and gas and the like. The method includes obtaining height values which indicate the sea surface height in relation to a reference level and which are calculated using altimeter data from aircraft or satellites. The obtained height values are sorted to remove incorrect and improbable values, and are adapted to one another based on the different orbits of the flying craft to obtain maximum agreement among the values to establish relative values of the geoid.
