  • Patent number: 6682273
Abstract: A cutting insert is clamped in a pocket of a holder by a top clamp assembly which includes a clamp arm screwed to the holder, and a clamp plate interposed between the insert and a front part of the clamp arm. The clamp plate is formed of a harder and more wear-resistant material than the clamp arm and transmits clamping forces from the clamp arm to the cutting insert. The hard clamp plate shields the clamp arm from being impacted by chips generated during a machining operation, thereby minimizing wearing of the clamp arm.

  • Patent number: 6623202
Abstract: A driven tool includes a driven part which is rotatably driven by a drive part. The driven part and the drive part are coaxially arranged one inside of the other. The drive part and the driven part are conical as viewed in a longitudinal section plane containing the axis. The driven part includes driven teeth projecting generally radially with respect to the axis and received in respective radially-open recesses formed in the drive part. Each of the driven teeth makes contact with a wall of the respective recess at first and second contact places which are respectively situated on opposite sides of a generally radial line of symmetry of the driven tooth. The contact places are operable to transmit a drive force from the drive part to the driven part in respective directions of rotation. A driving angle in the range of −5° to +45° is formed at each contact place.

  • Patent number: 6623216
Abstract: A tool holder for mounting a cutting insert for chip removing machining includes a head on which is disposed an insert-receiving seat having an insert-support surface. A plate-shaped member is detachably mounted on the head and includes first and second fingers. The fingers include respective first and second side surfaces forming a recess therebetween. The side surfaces are arranged in upstanding relationship with the insert-support surface to form therewith the insert-receiving seat. The first finger includes a through-slot and is flexible, wherein the first side surface is elastically displaceable relative to the second side surface. An intermediate portion of each of the side surfaces includes a recess wherein each of the side surfaces defines a plurality of spaced-apart contact areas. The plate-shaped member and the head include serrations which are in meshing relationship, except at locations which permit the first finger to be elastically deformed relative to the second finger, by an adjusting screw.

  • Publication number: 20030129024
Abstract: A tool holder simultaneously carries at least two diametrically arranged tool heads, each tool head carrying cutting inserts for chip removing machining. The tool holder includes an adaptor connected to a coupling. The adaptor has at least two diametrically opposite side surfaces which-diverge away from the coupling. The side surfaces have seats in order to replaceably receive respective tool heads. A line which lies in both a first basal plane and in one of the side surfaces forms an angle in the interval 1°-150° with a longitudinal center line of the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 6572309
Abstract: A holder includes a seat which removably carries a cutting insert for chip removing machining. The seat can be widened by the manual application of a force to enable the insert to be replaced. The force is applied by a manually actuable key which includes a shaft and an expansion mechanism mounted on an end of the shaft. The expansion mechanism includes a plate which is mountable to the holder in a manner enabling a projection pin of the shaft to enter a slot which constitutes an extension of the insert seat. The portion of the pin entering the slot has an out-of-round cross sectional shape. By rotating the shaft relative to the plate, the pin rotates to widen the slot, and thus to widen the seat. Rotation of the shaft relative to the plate is terminated after a predetermined amount of rotation, in response to mutual engagement between stop surfaces disposed on the shaft and the plate, respectively.

  • Publication number: 20020154959
Abstract: A holder is designed to receive a cutting insert intended for parting and grooving operations. The insert is clampable in a seat formed between a blade tongue and a clamping finger which respectively extend from lower and upper front parts of the holder. A gap separates those front parts in order to enable those parts to be forced towards each other by means of a clamping mechanism mounted in the holder. The clamping mechanism comprises a drawbar, a first end portion of which is movable within a bore formed in one of the front parts, and a second end portion of which is fixed in the other front part. The first end portion of the drawbar includes a head having a frusto-conical abutment surface. A tightening screw is threadedly mounted in the same front part as the head and is arranged to contact the abutment surface to displace the drawbar in a direction forcing the clamping finger and the tongue together to clamp the cutting insert in place.

  • Patent number: 6454498
Abstract: A clamping arrangement includes a holder blade having a body portion, the body portion having a key slot and a key recess are disposed relative to each other and relative to an insert-receiving slot such that, when a first keying member of a key is received in the key slot and the second keying member of the key is received in the key recess and the key is moved from an at-rest position to an opening position, the height of the insert-receiving slot is increased against resilient forces of the body portion to a sufficient height to install an insert for the holder blade and, when the key is returned to the at-rest position, the resilient forces cause the height of the insert-receiving slot to decrease and clamp the insert between the upper and lower surface of the insert-receiving slot.

  • Patent number: 6343898
Abstract: A metal cutting tool includes a holder arrangement, an indexible cutting insert seated on an insert-receiving site of the holder arrangement, and a screw for fastening the insert to the site. The bottom side of the insert includes more than two upright abutment surfaces arranged to abut respective upright support surfaces of the site, whereby the areas of contact formed by the mutually abutting surfaces lie inside of an outer perimeter of the insert. The abutment surfaces are oriented non-parallel to one another. The screw is arranged to urge the insert in a direction whereby less than all of the abutment surfaces abut respective support surfaces, and at least one abutment surface does not abut a support surface. When the insert is indexed, the non-abutting abutment surface is relocated and caused to abut a support surface when the screw is tightened, while an abutment surface that previously abutted a support surface becomes a non-abutting surface.
