  • Patent number: 6868075
Abstract: A system and corresponding method for utilizing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques in compressed modes. In certain embodiments, radio frames on an uplink data channel are formed and transmitted to include at least one transmission gap (TG) therein in a compressed mode. This may be achieved by reducing the spreading factor (e.g., by a factor of two). In combination with reducing the spreading factor, the TG may be tailored or adjusted to its desired length (TGL) by using bit repetition (or reduction of puncturing). This enables the TG length to be tailored to a desired length, without having to increase output power more than necessary. In other embodiments of this invention, frames on an uplink control channel are formed or formatted so as to repeat format indicator (e.g., TFCI) bits therein in compressed mode.

  • Patent number: 6473442
Abstract: A communications system and method are provided that enables the balancing and rate matching of different types of services used simultaneously by a mobile terminal. More specifically, the communications system includes a network and mobile terminal either of which is capable of matching the bit rates of a plurality of transport channels each handling a service to a bit rate of a physical channel handling multiplexed services using relative offset measures and predefined rules. The network assigns and signals the relative offset measures to the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6381229
Abstract: An uplink common physical channel (random access channel) frame structure with a separate preamble and data portion. The preamble is used by a base station to detect that a mobile station is attempting a random access request. The data portion of the channel includes user data, and pilot symbols that provide energy for channel estimation during reception of the data portion. A guard interval can be generated using a “filler” made up of dummy chips, predetermined symbols, and/or an unmodulated carrier, and inserted between the preamble and data portion of the frame, thus enabling a mobile station to maintain its power transmission and making it easier to implement such a guard interval in a WCDMA system.
