  • Patent number: 6983725
Abstract: Valve mechanism in an internal combustion engine, includes a valve play-take up mechanism in the form of a piston in a cylinder chamber at one end of an exhaust rocker arm, and a hydraulic circuit with valve elements for supplying or draining off pressure fluid to and from the cylinder chamber. A second cylinder chamber with a piston acting in an opposite direction is arranged in the rocker arm and communicates with the first-mentioned cylinder chamber. A brake rocker arm is mounted on the same rocker arm shaft as the exhaust rocker arm and has an outer end, which acts against the piston in the second cylinder chamber. • Patent number: 6953023
Abstract: A method for controlling a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine having electronically controlled airflow comprising limiting a currently available maximum engine torque below maximum torque based on a limited torque output condition, the limited torque output condition not being based on current ambient temperature or pressure conditions. The method also includes determining a driver demanded torque based on a current throttle position. The method further includes controlling the engine to deliver the driver demand torque if the internal engine condition does not indicate the limited torque output condition or to deliver a calibratable percentage of the currently available maximum torque if the internal engine condition indicates a limited torque output condition.

  • Publication number: 20050000498
Abstract: Method and arrangement for delivering EGR gas to combustion spaces in a multi-cylinder, four-stroke internal combustion engine. Each cylinder, with an associated piston, has at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve (10) for controlling fluid interconnection between the combustion space in the cylinder and an intake system and an exhaust system, respectively. A rotatable camshaft (18) having a cam curve (23) is designed to interact with a cam follower (17) for operation of the exhaust valve (10) during a first opening and closing phase. The cam curve (23) is also designed to interact with a second cam follower (20) during a second opening and closing phase which is phase-offset in relation to the first aforementioned opening and closing phase. This configuration facilitates the cylinder being connected to the exhaust system during the induction stroke, once the exhaust stroke is completed.

  • Publication number: 20040168660
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing an internal combustion engine which for each cylinder, with the associated piston, has at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve (10) for controlling the connection between the combustion chamber in the cylinder and an intake system and an exhaust system, respectively. A rotatable camshaft (18) with a cam (22) is designed to interact with a first cam follower (17) and a second cam follower (20) in order to switch between two different operating modes. The cam followers are mounted on a pivotal rocker arm (13), the second cam follower (20) being hydraulically adjustable between two positions by means of a piston (21) located in a hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder is connected to a hydraulic fluid source via a hydraulic fluid duct and the piston can be moved from one position to the other by the action of a quantity of hydraulic fluid delivered to the hydraulic cylinder.

  • Publication number: 20040103649
Abstract: Diesel engine with unit injectors and a catalytic converter arranged in the engine exhaust system, for reaction with uncombusted fuel. The injectors have spill valves, which in their closed position build up pressure in the injectors, and needle control valves, which in their closed position keep the needle valves of the injectors closed and which, when they are open, open the needle valves. The unit injectors have pump plungers, which are driven by individual cam elements whit a cam curve shaped so that a pressure is maintained in the injects for so long a period during one cycle that injection of fuel is permitted at least when an associated exhaust valve in the combustion chamber begins to open so late during the expansion stroke and temperature drop, that fuel after injection is not combusted in the cylinder but reaches the catalytic converted uncombusted.

  • Patent number: 6709477
Abstract: Device for separating oil mist from blow-by gases from an internal combustion engine, comprising a rotating cylindrical container (17) with a central inlet (23) for gases with oil mist at one end and a central outlet (24) for gases and peripheral outlets (25) for separated oil at the other end. Between the inlet and the outlet, narrow channels (34) extend in several layers, spaced from the axis of rotation, through which the gas with oil drops flows. Under the influence of the centrifugal force the drops of oil are moved at the same time radially, the rotational speed and the length and radial dimension of the channels being adapted to each other so that the oil drops strike the channel walls before flowing out of the channels.

  • Patent number: 6675782
Abstract: Supercharged internal combustion engine with two separate exhaust manifolds (2a,2b) from individual cylinder groups and two separate inlet manifolds (3a,3b) each leading to a respective cylinder group. An inlet conduit (9) from a supercharger (6) leads to an equalising chamber (11), from which two tuned resonance tubes (12,13) lead to the inlet manifolds. From the exhaust manifolds a pair of exhaust recirculation conduits (19a,21a,19b,21b), each containing a control valve (18a,18b) controlled by a control unit (16) for controlling the exhaust recirculation, lead to the inlet manifolds. The control unit is disposed to open the control valves when the exhaust pressure is higher than the pressure in the inlet manifolds.

  • Patent number: 6622074
Abstract: A vehicle control system (10) including a vehicle motion control subsystem (12) that has an input receiving an intended driving demand (14) and a plurality of coordinator subsystems (16) for coordinating actuators of the vehicle. The vehicle motion control subsystem (12) communicates with the coordinator subsystems (16) to determine whether a single coordinator subsystem (16) can carry out the intended driving demand (14). The vehicle motion control subsystem (12) will distribute demand signals among one or more of the coordinator subsystems (16) to allow the vehicle to implement the intended driving demand (14).

  • Patent number: 6401699
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is disclosed including at least two cylinders, each including an inlet port, an air inlet manifold for providing air to the cylinders, at least two outlets for emitting exhaust gases from the cylinders, a recirculation conduit for reducing harmful emissions from the exhaust gases and extending from one of the outlet for recirculating the exhaust gases from an outlet to a connection point in the air inlet manifold thereby defining a first volume from the outlet to the connection point, the air inlet manifold being divided into at least two further volumes defined by the distance between the connection point to each of the inlet points, at least one turbine for recovering energy from the exhaust gases, and a compressor for compressing air supplied to the air inlet manifold, the first volume and the further volumes being dimensioned such that the recirculated exhaust gases are substantially equally distributed between each of the cylinders.

  • Patent number: 6247449
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for reducing vibrations in an internal combustion engine (2) which has a plurality of drive units (3-8) connected to a common output shaft (9). These are equipped with a combustion chamber and inlets (34-39) for fuel from organs for fuel supply. Any one of the driving units (7) can be switched from a normal operating condition to an alternative operating condition, in which the supply of fuel to the drive unit is blocked, which causes an alteration in the torque of the driving unit which has been thus switched. The amount of fuel supplied to the drive units which are in a normal operating condition is distributed according to a chosen pattern in order to create torques in these which cause a chosen suppresion of vibrations.
