    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for production of a porous ceramic body and a corresponding porous ceramic body which can find application, in particular, as filter, or filter membrane in cross-flow filtration. According to the method of the invention, a bimodal ceramic powder mixture is moulded to give a moulded body, which is subsequently recrystallised by conditioning at high temperature, such that the fine particles melt and link the large particles firmly together by deposition thereon, such that, in defined regions (2,3), a porous ceramic body with a homogeneous structure of almost uniform particle size and pore size is formed, whereby the pores provide an interconnected, open, three-dimensional network.

    Abstract: A filter device for filtering soot particles from diesel engine exhaust gases comprises a casing, a shaped porous filter body, preferably of silicon carbide, SiC, such as a honeycomb structure wall flow filter body made from SiC particles. A membrane made from particles and/or fibres and having a smaller pore size than the filter body is applied on the gas outlet side surfaces of the filter body, and a catalytically active coating is applied on, and in the interior of, the filter body, e.g., on a wash coating. The design of the filter body with the small pore size membrane applied to outlet surfaces allows soot particles to travel into the interior of the filter which has relatively large pores and where they are removed by decomposition by contact with the catalyst deposited in the filter body.

    Abstract: A cross-flow filtration device which receives a feed stock at a feed end face and separates the feed stock into filtrate and retentate. The device has a structure formed from a plurality of substantially parallel monolith segments of porous material, each segment having a plurality of passageways which extend longitudinally from the feed end face to a retentate end face of the structure. The structure contains a filtrate conduit network comprised of both an intersegment filtrate conduit, formed by the arrangement of the segments, and at least one intrasegment filtrate conduit formed within at least one segment. The filtrate conduit network provides low pressure drop flow paths for filtrate flow through the porous material from the passageways to nearby filtrate conduits, and at least some of the passageways are separated from filtrate conduits by intervening passageways, thereby enabling a high ratio of passageway surface area to volume of the device and a high rate of filtrate removal.

    Abstract: In filtering particles such as soot from a flue gas a porous filter body of a particulate material bonded together in the body is employed. The material is a metal or metal-like material having a thermal conductivity in excess of 10 W/mK, and the porous filter body has a porosity of 50-90% and a maximum pore size of 10-40 um. The porous filter body also has a thermal conductivity in excess of 10 W/mK. In accordance with the method, the flue gas is conducted through the porous filter body so as to accumulate the particles in the porous filter body. The particles accumulated in the porous filter body are burned off, whereby heat is generated locally. The heat generated locally by the burning-off of the particles is conducted throughout the porous filter body so that the temperature rise generated by the burning-off heat is reduced. Consequently, the porous filter body is not exposed to fatal, thermal stresses.
