  • Patent number: 9041387
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to techniques for magnetic field angular position sensing. A device designed in accordance with this disclosure may include a magnetoresistive sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of an angular position of a magnetic field, the signal having an angular range of 180 degrees, a first polarity sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of a polarity of the magnetic field sensed from a first location, and a second polarity sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of a polarity of the magnetic field sensed from a second location different from the first location.

  • Patent number: 8952686
Abstract: A system includes a magnetoresistive (MR) bridge circuit, a magnetic field sensor, and an adjustable load. The MR bridge circuit receives a supply voltage and generates an output voltage that indicates a strength/direction of a magnetic field. The MR bridge circuit includes first and second MR elements connected in series between a supply node and a ground node, and third and fourth MR elements connected in series between the supply node and the ground node. The output voltage is generated between a first node that is common to the first and second MR elements and a second node that is common to the third and fourth MR elements. The sensor generates signals based on the strength/direction of the magnetic field. The adjustable load is connected in parallel with one of the MR elements, and has a resistance that is controlled based on the signals generated by the sensor.

  • Patent number: 8816679
Abstract: This disclosure describes techniques for sensing an angular position of a rotating object over an angular position range that includes up to 360 degrees using an arc position encoder comprising a substantially 180-degree angular position sensing range. The encoder may include a base comprising an arc length defined by a first and a second end, one or more magnetic field sensors disposed within the base between the first and second ends, and one or more polarity transition sensors also disposed within the base between the first and second ends. The encoder may further include a magnetic target that includes first and second magnetic poles disposed on opposite ends so as to generate a uniform magnetic field, wherein the magnetic target is coupled to the rotating object so as to rotate about an axis of rotation located substantially in a center of a circle defined by the base.

  • Patent number: 5671161
Abstract: A switch is provided with the ability to diagnose its own operation and provide signals that represent the actuation of the switch and various diagnostic outputs that indicate fault conditions or potential fault conditions with regard to either the switch or related machinery. A magnetically sensitive component, such as a Hall element, is used to provide an analog output signal that is representative of the position of an actuator to which a magnet structure is rigidly attached. As the actuator moves in response to an external force, the magnet structure moves with respect to a stationary magnetically sensitive component. The analog output from the magnetically sensitive component can be used to determine the position of the switch. Based on this information, a microprocessor provides a binary output signal indicating whether the switch is actuated or deactuated.
