Abstract: A shear sealing system of a blowout preventer of a wellbore is provided. The blowout preventer including a housing having a bore and a guideway therethrough. A tubular of the wellbore is positionable in the bore. The shear sealing system includes at least one carriage, at least one blade and at least one seal. The carriages are slidably positionable in the guideway of the blowout preventer. The blades are carried by the carriages and movable thereby between a retracted position and an extended position. The blades are engageable with the tubular when in the extended position. The seal forms a seal about the tubular and with the blade when the blade is in the extended position.

Abstract: A seal comprises a metal seal ring with a first slanted mating surface for sealing engagement with a mating surface on a body and a second slanted mating surface for sealing engagement with a mating surface on a bonnet. The mating surfaces are the same angle as measured from the axis of the ram of the BOP. The seal also defines opposing slanting surfaces which provide a degree of flexure to the seal for sealing engagement. With the application of pressure on the inside surfaces of the seal, the mating surfaces are pressed even harder against the mating surfaces of the body and bonnet.

Abstract: At least one self-powered light source is mounted on the tail rod of a BOP to provide an indication of the position of the ram of the BOP. The light source moves back and forth with the ram actuating piston of the BOP. Opposite the light source is a light-receiving lens. The lens is coupled by optical fiber to a optical to electrical converter. As the BOP is actuated, the tail rod moves, thereby moving the light source to a position adjacent a different lens. The lens which is now positioned adjacent the light source sends a light signal to its respective converter, thereby indicating the position of the tail rod and thus to ram of the BOP.

Abstract: A blowout preventer for coiled tubing includes a pressure regulator for a slip ram so that the coiled tubing can be held firmly without exceeding the yield strength of the coiled tubing material and without damaging the coiled tubing.
