  • Patent number: 5810766
Abstract: An infusion/aspiration apparatus including a base member and first and second cassettes including a base member and first and second cassettes releasably connected to a base member. The first cassette forms an aspiration passageway and a collection area, and the second cassette includes a body and an infusion tube. Preferably, the base member and the second cassette form a vacuum passageway in fluid communication with the aspiration passageway. In operation, an aspiration tube is connected to an inlet of the aspiration passageway, and an outlet of the vacuum passageway is connected to a source of vacuum pressure. An infusion fluid is conducted through the infusion tube and to a surgical site, and that site is aspirated via the aspiration tube. The aspirated materials are drawn into the aspiration passageway and thence into the collection area.

  • Patent number: 5554894
Abstract: A footswitch for ophthalmic surgery includes a rotatable foot pedal, a spring member which biases the foot pedal to resist rotation and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the bias of the spring member to a surgeon selected value. In an illustrated embodiment, the adjustment mechanism includes a worm screw gear assembly which is used to vary the amount of torque generated by a coil spring on a shaft upon which a pedal is mounted. As a worm gear is rotated by a thumb wheel, a spur gear is rotated to wind or unwind coil spring thereby increasing or decreasing the amount of tension exerted by coil spring on a shaft.

  • Patent number: 5059204
Abstract: The inner needle in a guillotine type ocular cutter is ground and placed within the swaged outer needle in an interference fit, so that a radial force is exerted by said inner needle on said outer needle to better shear the ocular tissue. Further, a positive stop is effected on the drive shaft controlling the inner needle so that the distance from the end of the outer needle port to the tissue is minimized. Alternately, the drive shaft has a dwell exerted on it.
