  • Patent number: 11866652
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a procedure, which through the application of a catalyst in homogeneous phase, allows the transformation of heavy hydrocarbons (vacuum residue, atmospheric residue, heavy and extra-heavy crudes) into hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight, characterized because after its application, the hydrocarbons obtain greater API gravity, lower kinematic viscosity and different composition by hydrocarbon families (SARA) that increases the proportion of saturated and aromatic resins and asphalts. The sulphur and nitrogen content is also reduced, resulting in higher yields to high commercial value distillates and a lighter product as compared to the original crude.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 19, 2022
Date of Patent: January 9, 2024
    Assignee: INSTITUTO MEXICANO DEL PETROLEO

  • Patent number: 10364386
Abstract: A microemulsion is formulated with a surfactant, a co-surfactant and brine, for recovery of heavy and extra-heavy crude oils by reducing the viscosity of such crude oils and improving their rheological properties for production and pipeline transportation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 2013
Date of Patent: July 30, 2019
    Assignee: INSTITUTO MEXICANO DEL PETROLEO
Inventors: Persi Schacht Hernandez, Felipe de Jesus Ortega Garcia, Jose Manuel Dominguez Esquivel, Elizabeth Mar Juarez, Jesus Ricardo Ramirez Lopez
  • Patent number: 9512373
Abstract: The physical and chemical properties of heavy and extra-heavy crudes are improved by a procedure that uses a homogeneous type catalyst and involves the stages: 1. separation and removal of the water fraction that is contained in the hydrocarbons, 2. catalyst injection and activation of the reaction system, 3. elimination of gaseous hydrocarbons and recovery of the partial pressure of hydrogen at different times, 4. reaction and 5. recovery of distillated products.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 9464239
Abstract: The present invention relates to improving heavy crude oil, and extra through a scheme considering the use of ionic liquids catalysts based on Mo and Fe catalyst is highly miscible with crude oil and are in the homogeneous phase crude oil. Furthermore, this invention relates to improving heavy crude in two stages, the first ionic liquid catalyst, and the second supported catalyst. The API gravity crude is increased from 12.5 to 19 points in the first stage and viscosities up to 5600-1600 decreased from 60-40 cSt certain to 37.8° C. While in the second stage, you get an upgraded crude oil with 32.9° API, viscosity of 4.0 cSt, reduction in total sulphur content of 0.85 wt % nitrogen and 0295 ppm by weight, respectively. As a considerable reduction of asphaltenes from 28.65 to 3.7% weight.

  • Publication number: 20100116713
Abstract: Heavy crude oil residue and vacuum residue is upgraded using an ionic liquid catalyst formulated with metals of Group VIB and VIIIB of the periodic table, which catalyst is highly miscible in the hydrocarbon phase. The combination of different metals and acidity from the protons that make up the ionic liquid breaks the links C—S, C—N and C—O of the resins and asphaltenes and increases API gravity, decreases viscosity, removes sulfur and nitrogen compounds, and results in conversion of 50 to 70% of the waste oil and heavy crude oil into lighter distillates.
