Patent number: 6437836Abstract: An extended functionality remote control (EFRC) provides a hardware/software implementation of an integrated interface for remote control emulation. A PDA or other portable computing device is used as a platform for the EFRC application software and peripheral hardware. The EFRC also merges information services into remote controls. Implementation of these information services takes the form of, e.g., electronic program guides (EPGs) merged with the functioning of remote controls. In addition to the portable computing device, the hardware portion of the invention according to a preferred embodiment includes a keypad and an infrared transmitter subsystem which are managed by a microcontroller. The microcontroller also exchanges data with application software of the computing device via a serial communications link.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1998Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Navispace, Inc.Inventors: Eugene Huang, Peter Daley

Patent number: 6405319Abstract: A system for validating network communication, such as e-mail. A person sending information to a previously unverified recipient first enters “Address Book” information about the unverified recipient into the sender's e-mail system. Part of this initial information includes the recipient's e-mail address and a way of communicating with the intended recipient other than by using the e-mail address. For example, regular mail, fax, or other means can be specified. When the sender sends the information to the intended recipient, the recipient is not able to receive the information until an identification code is entered by the intended recipient. The identification code is transferred via the different way of communicating that does not use the intended recipient's e-mail address. For example, the code can be sent via fax. The intended recipient then logs on to the e-mail system and enters their user name and the code.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Buildpoint CorporationInventors: Nicolas Georg Arnold, Peter A. Patent number: 5984323Abstract: A brake actuator is provided which utilizes fluid as the actuation medium. The fluid is transferred from an activation reservoir through a tube to an expansion chamber which activates the brake. The fluid is contained in a closed system and is biased to a non-braking state so that the wheels will automatically return to their freely rotating state without any further action by the skater after braking. The upper reservoir fits between the liner surrounding the users calf and the back of the skate. The lower reservoir or expansion chamber is positioned adjacent the mechanical braking mechanism. The lower reservoir is biased so that the fluid returns to the upper reservoir and the brake is deactivated. A buffer is provided around the upper reservoir to assure even flow through the reservoir and tube and to create a compressible environment. The buffer helps to prevent inadvertent braking and to provide control of the degree of braking.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1997Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Inventor: Peter A. Daley

Patent number: 5772221Abstract: A brake actuator is provided which utilizes either a mechanical or fluid actuation mechanism. The fluid is transferred from an activation reservoir through a tube to an expansion chamber which activates an extendable piston of the brake. The fluid is contained in a closed system and may be biased to a non-braking state so that the wheels will automatically return to their freely rotating state without any further action by the skater after braking. The upper reservoir fits between the liner surrounding the users calf and the back of the skate. The lower reservoir is positioned adjacent the mechanical braking mechanism. Patent number: 5003708Abstract: A custom insole is made up of a plurality of layers of a thermoformable material united together at their interfaces to conform in size and contour to the bottom surface of a foot, the layers comprising at least one strength layer and at least one filler layer united to the strength layer and contoured to conform to the bottom surface of the foot; and an arch flange curves upwardly for a distance to laterally support the bone structure in the arch area of the foot. In the method of making the insole, an unformed blank of thermoformable material is placed on a resilient support portion with the ball portion on a firm surface and, by placing the foot on top of the layers and applying downward pressure, it will cause the heel of the foot to form a depression in the heel portion and the ball portion of the foot to flatten out the layers resting on the firm surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1989Date of Patent: April 2, 1991Assignee: Dynamic Foam Products, Inc.Inventor: Peter A. Daley
