Abstract: Methods and apparatus to form tear-off paperband composites that adhesively attach a paper web to an empty web spool. In some embodiments, the paperband composite is applied in several layers to an empty web spool, each layer suitable for fixedly attaching a paper web to the empty spool. Multiple layers of paperband composite allow for use during multiple turn-up procedures with one layer of paperband composite used per turn-up procedure. In some examples, the paperband composite may be applied to a paper spool tangentially along the spool face and perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the spool. In other examples, the paperband composite may be spirally wrapped around the paper spool.

Abstract: Improved apparatus and methods of operating a turn up apparatus on a paper machine to improve the performance of a paper machine turn up process is presented. The apparatus may include a cross track with an internal slot for a paperband to move upon and affixed a surface that is proximate to the first internal slot. The first apron may lie across a surface above a location for the paperband and interact with the paperband when the paperband is pulled out of the apparatus during a turn-up operation. An apron tensioning device may provide an additional force against an edge of a surface of the apron. A curved track may hold the paperband at an angle to an axis of the cross track, and the paperband feeding device may advance the paperband during a portion of a turn-up operation.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are winches comprising an overload protection mechanism. Certain aspects can comprise a drive gear frictionally coupled to a driven gear. Winch assemblies disclosed herein also can be configured to connect to common power tools such as may allow a user to operate the winch without specific training or knowledge of the application to which the winch is applied, without concern for damaging the tool within which the winch is applied. Material lifts, for instance, are contemplated herein as comprising the disclosed winches.

Abstract: An improved paper band delivery assembly for reliable high speed delivery of a turn-up paper band across a moving web of paper being wound onto a spool. The turn-up paper band is made ready for a turn up procedure by coiling a predetermined length of paper band suitable for a particular machine and retaining the coiled paper band in a reservoir pending deployment across a spool for a turn up procedure. The paper band may be coiled via manual operation or via automated operation. Coiling apparatus may be modularly replaced on a paper making machine. The coiled paper band may be supported within the reservoir on rollers, pins, or other items conducive to fast and reliable uncoiling.

In some embodiments, the transfer tape may be a combination of a tape substrate coated on one side with a web grabbing adhesive and on the other side with a mounting adhesive and an affixed cord or cordlike feature, and a release liner having a release liner substrate fully coated on a first side with a release layer and zone-coated on a second side with a release layer. In some embodiments an elevated profile, similar to that resulting from the incorporated cord or cordlike feature, may be formed during the application of the transfer tape with specialized apparatus.

Abstract: A family of paper tape turn-up constructs for accomplishing automated paper web turnup in paper processing. Methods and apparatus to form the constructs are described. Methods and Apparatus to apply the constructs to paper production equipment are also described. In some examples, the paper tape turn-up construct includes a cover flap to protect an adhesive layer during initiation of the paper web turn up process.

Abstract: A paper tape turn-up construct including a cover flap and a multi-bend structure to both protect an adhesive layer and to build an optimized elevated structure to present the adhesive layer during initiation of the paper web turn up process. Methods and apparatus to form the constructs and apply the constructs to paper production equipment are also included. The multi-bend paper turn up construct includes layers of adhesive and pulpable substrate with strategically located release materials, such as silicon that enhance a bridging of a gap between a rotating paper web and an empty spool surface.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for reducing condensation in a track. An electric device continuously heating compressed air to a regulated temperature is mounted adjacent to a portion of a track associated with a tape delivery assembly. A flexible hose assists with regulating the air flow to expel and repel debris. Tee fittings are used to provide extra flexibility to adapt to various pipe sizes.

Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing an adhesive with paper covers to be used in a paper web turn-up operation. The resulting adhesive and paper cover construct is used in effecting the attachment of a paper web to an approaching spool. In some examples, the paper cover of the deposited adhesive may be affixed on two sides surrounding the deposited adhesive, in other examples a single attachment may be used. In some examples, the paper cover may be perforated to facilitate rupture of the paper and flow of adhesive. In some examples, perforations may enable the movement of adhesive through the paper.

Such adhesive tape applicators include a housing adapted to contain a roll of adhesive tape; a compressible tape hub attached to an inner surface of the housing and adapted to rotatably support the roll of adhesive tape; and an adhesive roller apparatus for applying the adhesive tape to a substrate. The compressibility of the compressible tape hub provides a means of braking and tearing the adhesive tape roll.

Abstract: A single-use box containing a paper band coil. Previously known methods of feeding a paper band coil into turn-up machines are spatially inefficient and may cause significant problems in application. In contrast, this pre-loaded, single-use box is an adaptable and efficient way to feed paper band coil into a variety of turn-up machine configurations.

The components are unwound from the spools and pressed together such that they become joined along a longitudinal edge strip, then dispensed from the housing.
