  • Patent number: 7685634
Abstract: A system and method for unlocking storage drives during the transition from a low power state to an operational state in a computer system is disclosed. During initiation of the computer system, a password for each password-protected storage drive is saved to a memory location in the computer system. During the transition from a low power state to an operational power state, the password associated with each password-protected device is retrieved from the memory location on the basis of the unique identifier associated with each storage drive and applied to the storage drive for the purpose of unlocking or making the storage drive accessible.

  • Publication number: 20060075185
Abstract: A method for caching data in an information handling system is disclosed in which write commands issued to the hard disk drive of the computer system are routed to non-volatile cache memory of the computer system if the hard disk drive is in a reduced power state. The non-volatile cache memory may be in the form of flash memory. If the hard disk drive is not in a reduced power state, the write command is transmitted to the hard disk drive.

  • Patent number: 6988194
Abstract: An information handling system includes a processor, a storage medium coupled to the processor, and a program stored in the storage medium and executable by the processor. The program is for causing the processor to, in response to a boot event, detect that a device is not present in the information handling system where the device was present in the information handling system during a prior boot event or detect a device that is present but was not present during a prior boot event. The program is also for causing the processor to access a list that indicates a boot order where the list is stored in the storage medium prior to the boot event and including an entry associated with each bootable device. The program is further for causing the processor to store an indicator in the entry where the indicator indicates that the device is dormant or to replace a dormant device in the boot order with a newly present device of the same type.

  • Patent number: 6505263
Abstract: A computer system having bus controller operating code stored in a non operating system managed, extended portion of system memory. In one example, the operating code is executed by a bus controller for a computer bus conforming to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification. In one example, the bus controller operating code is stored in a portion of system memory that is located above the top system memory address reported to the operating system, thereby hiding the stored code from the operating system. In one example, the bus controller operating code is constructed during the startup of the computer system with a code construction routine. Storing bus controller operating code in a non operating system managed, extended portion of system memory provides a computer system greater flexibility in system memory usage.

  • Patent number: 6408397
Abstract: A method and apparatus enables a computer system to recover from power failures, and includes a computer system having a UPS connected to a computer, the computer having an RTC, a driver, and a program stored in the computer's memory. The program has instructions for performing the following steps: a) when a source of AC power fails, the UPS supplying AC power to the computer; b) the UPS notifying the computer to shut down; and c) just before the computer shuts down, the driver setting the RTC for a wake-up time at a prescribed time in the future.

  • Patent number: 5708777
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively locking and unlocking the system password of a PC in response to authorized requests by the system administrator. The method and apparatus operate in a PC environment having a Setup utility program and the capability for a system password to control access. The disclosed method contemplates receiving a user request to either disable or change the system password. If the request is a request to disable the system password, then the system password status is examined. If the system password status is "locked," then the system password is not disabled. If the system password status is "unlocked," then the system password is disabled. If, on the other hand, the user request is a request to change the system password, then the setup password is examined. If the setup password is disabled, then the user is permitted to change the system password.

  • Patent number: 5214695
Abstract: A personal computer system according to the present invention comprises a system processor, a random access memory, a read only memory, and at least one direct access storage device. A direct access storage device controller coupled between the system processor and direct access storage device includes a protection mechanism for protecting a region of the storage device. The protected region of the storage device includes a master boot record, a BIOS image and a system reference diskette image. The BIOS image includes a section known as Power on Self Test (POST). POST is used to test and initialize a system. Upon detecting any configuration error, system utilities from the system reference diskette image, such as set configuration programs, diagnostic programs and utility programs can be automatically activated from the direct access storage device.
