Patent number: 6079207Abstract: According to the present invention, the master cylinder of a motor vehicle actuating unit has a bipartite flange, and one part of the flange is provided as a mounting plate which is guided on a spherical bead shaped on the master cylinder. The mounting plate clamps the master cylinder in relation to the wall of a brake force booster. This ensures that the master cylinder may escape or may be deflected in a rearward direction in the case of a crash, without transmitting an excessively large amount of force to the wall of the brake force booster.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1999Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: ITT Manufacturing Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Brun-Friedrich Stadler, Harald Konig, Peter Bohm, Klaus Bergelin, Albin Low, Gilbert Bischoff

Patent number: 5961189Abstract: A brake system for automotive vehicles has a pneumatic brake power booster with two chambers one of the chambers being adapted to be acted upon by a low pressure and the other one by a higher pressure, and at least one of the chambers being adapted to be connected to a pneumatic pump. A device is provided to activate and deactivate the pump in response to the pressure that prevails in the chamber of the brake power booster associated with the pump.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 1996Date of Patent: October 5, 1999Assignee: Continental Teves AG & Co., oHGInventors: Harald Lutteke, Peter Bohm, Peter Drott, Hans-Jorg Feigel, Manfred Kahrs, Peter Rieth

Patent number: 5927821Abstract: A hydraulic automotive vehicle brake system with an actuating assembly that is attached to the splashboard of the automotive vehicle and is operable by the vehicle brake pedal. In order to reduce the possibility of risk to the driver during a collision (especially a rear end collision), the present invention provides a system which simulates an increase volume requirement of the brake system, thus permitting increased actuating travel of the actuating assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: ITT Automotive Europe GmbHInventors: Jurgen Bauer, Heinz Zingel, Peter Bohm, Peter Drott, Ulrich Knothe, Bastian Witte, Ruprecht Sinnhuber

Patent number: 4505116Abstract: A master cylinder device for controlling the pressure of hydraulic braking fluid in two separate braking circuits of a hydraulic braking system includes a housing having two parallel and co-extensive pressure chambers each movably accommodating one master piston. A pressure element transmits the brake pedal force to one of the master pistons to pressurize the fluid present in a first pressure compartment and thus in the associated first brake circuit. A part of the thus pressurized fluid is diverted to an actuating compartment of the other pressure chamber to act on the other master piston and thus to pressurize the fluid present in the second pressure compartment and in the associated other brake circuit. When elevated pressure fails to develop in the first pressure compartment, the pressure element engages a tappet of the other master piston to mechanically displace the same in the actuating direction and thus to pressurize the fluid supplied to the other brake circuit.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1981Date of Patent: March 19, 1985Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Rolf Weiler, Peter Bohm

Patent number: 4481865Abstract: A brake booster comprising a housing which is divided into a vacuum chamber and a working chamber by a movable wall. A tube is disposed in the housing coaxial of the longitudinal axis thereof having its ends fastened to the end walls of the housing. The tube is provided with longitudinal slots in the vacuum chamber which are open remote from the movable wall. Parts of the movable wall project through the slots and are fastened to a valve housing extending into the tube, the valve housing containing a control valve which controls the pressure in the working chamber. This arrangement allows a short overall length of the booster and enables easy assembly thereof with respect to known prior art brake boosters.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1980Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Reimund Becht, Peter Bohm

Patent number: 4418613Abstract: The vacuum brake boosters used today require a relatively heavy vacuum housing to gain the necessary stiffness for transmitting the mechanical actuating force. According to the present invention draw bars extend from one housing wall to the other parallel to the push rod and penetrating the vacuum piston in a sealed manner to receive the mechanical force. Thus, the vacuum housing does not receive the mechanical force and as a result can be constructed of lighter material. The movable sealing means provided between the vacuum piston and the draw-bars are in the form of small rolling diaphragms.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1981Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Rolf Weiler, Peter Bohm

Patent number: 4330996Abstract: The brake booster comprises two booster units in a tandem arrangement each having a movable wall. A stationary partition is provided between the two movable walls. In order to increase the axial stiffness of the booster casing, the partition is provided with bolt projections extending in both directions therefrom and are rigidly connected to the appropriate end walls of the casing. The ends of the bolt projections at the end walls form anchor means for connecting the booster to a master brake cylinder and to a supporting surface of a motor vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1980Date of Patent: May 25, 1982Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Reimund Becht, Peter Bohm

Patent number: 4325218Abstract: Known vacuum brake boosters are provided with a heavy sheet metal vacuum housing for transmitting reaction forces of the mechanical actuation to the booster carrier plate secured to a vehicle. According to the present invention the weight of the booster is remarkably reduced by providing draw bars for transmitting the reaction forces to the carrier plate inside the vacuum housing parallel to the push rod, penetrating the vacuum piston or movable wall and connecting both transverse end walls of the vacuum housing to the carrier plate. The draw bars are sealed at their point of penetration of the vacuum piston by small rolling membranes which are surrounded by tubular members fastened to the vacuum piston. A base plate assembly is provided including a base plate fastened to the transverse end wall of the vacuum housing adjacent the master cylinder, bolts fastened to one side of the base plate upon which the master cylinder is fastened and the draw bars are fastened to the other side of the base plate.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1980Date of Patent: April 20, 1982Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Rolf Weiler, Peter Bohm

Patent number: 4233884Abstract: In prior art vacuum brake boosters embodying a two-stage reaction, the magnitude of the two-stage reaction is limited because of the small space available for the reaction-delaying spring. Moreover, the lost motion present in the reaction lever mechanism has to be overcome when the braking operation is initiated. These disadvantages are overcome in a vacuum brake booster including a reaction mechanism constructed in accordance with the present invention wherein the reaction-delaying spring is positioned on the side of the reaction levers adjacent the vacuum chamber and by having the point of contact of the spring on the reaction levers at a greater radius than the point at which the levers are in engagement with the movable wall.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1979Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: ITT Industries, Inc.Inventors: Rolf Weiler, Peter Bohm
