Patent number: 7174002Abstract: Performance parameters of a switch may be ascertained by observing its behavior during a brief interval of high call volume. This may be achieved by accumulating call messages on a queue before allowing them to be processed together as a group. Without increasing the rate of incident calls, an accumulation of messages is accomplished by altering the amount of time that elapses between transferring the accumulation to a processing queue. In one implementation, test calls are accumulated in call input queue. Ordinarily, these calls are transferred to a second queue for processing every few milliseconds (the transfer period). By increasing the transfer period, an increased number of calls are stored in the call input queue before being transferred to the second queue. This allows a larger number of calls to be processed by the telephone switch in a given cycle and, hence, allows the switch's operation under increased call volumes to be observed.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2003Date of Patent: February 6, 2007Assignee: Nortel Networks, LtdInventor: Peter Burns

Publication number: 20060239549Abstract: A method, and digital capture apparatus for use therewith, is described for correcting a channel dependent color aberration in a digital image, where the digital image is composed of a plurality of color channels. The method includes capturing an image comprising the color channels, where one of the color channels is a blurred color channel due to a channel dependent color aberration affecting that channel. Then, one of the other color channels, other than the blurred color channel, is used as an indication of an aim sharpness, and the sharpness of the blurred color channel is adjusted, at least partially, toward the aim sharpness.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 26, 2005Publication date: October 26, 2006Inventors: Sean Kelly, Peter Burns

Publication number: 20060236621Abstract: Ground anchors, in particular tent stakes (100), comprise one or more inherently flexible tines (110), a ground compression plate (160), and various tie points (420, etc.) for attaching a guy rope or the like to the top of anchor. The compression plate extends perpendicularly or at a large angle to the tine so that when the guy rope pulls on the anchor, the tine will tend to rotate about an underground fulcrum so that the compression plate will press against the ground and help the anchor resist pullout. The anchors are driven into the ground with a hammer or mallet. The tie points include hooks (420), closed holes (520), and swivel types comprising vertical members (810) with restraining, bulbous tops (820). An additional spring tie point (1600) can be inserted into optional lugs (1094, 1096) in the compression plate. The stakes can be driven into the ground vertically, or at an angle for additional holding force in some situations. They can also incorporate angled compression plates (160H, 160I).Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2006Publication date: October 26, 2006Inventor: Peter Burns

Publication number: 20060013486Abstract: In an identification method, an analysis region in a test digital image is identified and values of a test parameter at a grid of locations in the analysis region are determined. A reference model of fixed pattern noise is associated with the test image. The reference model has an array of values of the test parameter for fixed pattern noise of a reference image acquisition device. A two or more dimensional similarity measure is calculated between the grid and at least a corresponding portion of the array.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 13, 2004Publication date: January 19, 2006Inventors: Peter Burns, Donald Williams, Craig Smith, Robert Reisch

Patent number: 6986354Abstract: A mouthguard (10) of “C” shaped configuration having a forward portion (11) from which there rearwardly diverges a pair of arms (12). The mouthguard (10) in transverse cross section is of a “U” shaped configuration. In one embodiment each arm (12) is provided with a ridge (22) which acts as a shield, while the forward portion (11) is thickened so as to provide a labial shield (23).Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1999Date of Patent: January 17, 2006Assignee: Signature Mouthguards Pty. The compression plate extends perpendicularly or at a large angle to the tine so that when the guy rope pulls on the anchor, the tine will tend to rotate about an underground fulcrum so that the compression plate will press against the ground and help the anchor resist pullout. The anchors are preferably driven into the ground with a hammer or mallet. The tie points include hooks (420), closed holes (520), and swivel types comprising vertical members (810) with restraining, bulbous tops (820). An additional spring tie point (1600) can be inserted into optional lugs (1094, 1096) in the compression plate. Publication number: 20050066870Abstract: A ground anchor for beach anchoring of vessels comprises three spaced parallel tines (10) pointed at one end and secured in spaced relationship at the other end by a mounting member (14, 24, 34). The mounting member includes one or more vertical or horizontal plates (16, 26, 40) and an optional stabilizer (28) which coact with the tines (10) to induce overlapping zones of compression in a sandy soil mass to reinforce the soil against movement of the anchor when horizontal tension is applied to it from a hawser attached to a moored vessel.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2004Publication date: March 31, 2005Inventor: Peter Burns

Patent number: 4562351Abstract: The invention consists of a mass spectrometer having a sample insertion probe on which a reference compound and an unknown sample can be simultaneously introduced without mixing into a field ionization or ion or neutral particle bombardment ion source. An insulated support is mounted by a parallel hinge on the end of the probe shaft. Two or more separated segments or emitter wires, one carrying the unknown sample, another carrying an appropriate reference compound, are mounted on a base member which is fitted to the support. A drive shaft, concentric with the outer probe shaft, has an eccentric peg on the end, which engages with a cam on the support, so that rotation of the drive shaft results in an oscillating motion of the segments or emitters, alternately positioning them in the optimum position for ionization. A spectrum of the sample or the reference compound can be obtained when required by selecting the appropriate position of the drive shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1983Date of Patent: December 31, 1985Assignee: VG Instruments Group LimitedInventors: Paul Atherton, Peter Burns, Brian N.
