  • Patent number: 10641043
Abstract: A positionable carriage assembly including an actuation device, such as one or more linear hydraulic cylinders, that is linked to a linear drive element. The linear drive element can include a first and second gear racks. The positionable carriage assembly may also include a first carriage member having a third gear rack and a second carriage member having a fourth gear rack. A first gear structure may be provided that operably intermeshes with the first and third racks while a second gear structure may be provided that operably intermeshes with the second and fourth racks. In operation the actuation device imparts a linear movement in a first direction onto the linear drive element which in turn imparts a synchronized linear movement in a second direction orthogonal the first direction onto the carriage members via the intermediate first and second gear structures.

  • Patent number: 6585062
Abstract: A reamer with a planetary gear train for use in horizontal directional drilling allows a reaming surface of the reamer to rotate at slower speeds while simultaneously conveying more power to the reamer via fast drill string rotational speeds. The reamer may also include mixing elements that may rotate at the same speed as the drill string. The reamer may further be steerable and include an offset mount that is rotatably coupled to the reamer. The offset mount being configured to couple a ream string to the reamer in such a manner that a longitudinal axis of the ream string is not collinear with the axis of rotation of the reamer. The reamer may also include u-joints which couple the reamer to a drill string and ream string, the u-joints allowing for a greater range of angles to be achieved when tilting the reamer by means of rotating and positioning the ream line.

  • Patent number: 5941320
Abstract: An underground directional boring machine includes a frame and a drive mechanism slidably mounted on the frame. A drill string is coupled to the drive mechanism for rotation and longitudinal advancement and retraction. A drive assembly moves the drive mechanism along the frame. The drive assembly includes two hydraulic cylinders coupled to the drive mechanism and extending in opposite directions. Free ends of the hydraulic cylinders are releasably secured to the frame at any one of a plurality of positions along the length of the frame. Selective pressurization of the cylinders results in sequential movement of the drive mechanism along the frame by alternative extension and retraction of the cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5607280
Abstract: An underground boring machine including an automatic pipe loading apparatus. A plurality of pipes are gravity fed through a discharge opening at a lower end of a magazine combining several columns of pipe. A selection member has a plurality of pipe receiving pockets, equal in number to the columns present in the magazine. The selection member can be in one of a first position wherein a first pipe receiving pocket is aligned with a first column or a second position wherein the first pipe receiving pocket is moved towards the machine. A pick-and-place lever arm picks a pipe from the first pipe receiving pocket and transports the pipe towards the machine. Lift-up arms selectively support the pipes within the magazine.

  • Patent number: 5556253
Abstract: An automatic pipe loading device includes a magazine containing a plurality of pipes which are gravity fed through a discharge opening at a discharge end of the magazine. A pipe transfer member is mounted beneath the magazine and rotates between load and unload positions. In a load position, the pipe transfer mechanism presents a pocket in alignment with a discharge opening of the magazine. In all other positions, the pipe transfer mechanism presents a blocking surface preventing pipes from being discharged from the magazine. The pipe transfer member includes a pipe grip for grasping a pipe received within the receiving pocket and releasing the grasped pipe at a desired location.
