  • Publication number: 20140084575
Abstract: A media binder has an inner assembly and a case assembly. The inner assembly includes inside boards pre-attached to a binding mechanism. Adhesive is placed on outward surfaces of the inside boards. The case assembly includes a cover sheet with at least one marginal edge attached to surface boards and at least one loose edge. To customize cover, a printed cover is inserted in-between the cover sheet and the surface board through an opening formed by the loose edge. The case assembly is then laminated. The laminated case assembly is combined with the inner assembly using the adhesive on the inside boards. A one-piece media binder has cover sheets wrapping around surface boards forming pockets. The surface boards are partially attached to paste downs. To customize cover, printed covers are inserted into the pockets, and the paste downs are then attached to the surface boards to seal loose edges.

  • Publication number: 20040209017
Abstract: A method for the preparation of a print medium that helps to reduce unwanted print artifacts such as bronzing, gloss non-uniformity, print smudging, and coalescence. Specifically, a method can comprise a step of preparing a coating composition with an acidic pH and a step of coating a media substrate with the coating composition to form an ink-receiving layer thereon. The coating composition can comprise a dispersion of inorganic particulates, a polymeric binder, and a weak base comprising a salt of an alkali metal and a weak acid. The weak base generates gas bubbles in the coating composition as a result of the acidic pH.

  • Patent number: 6475612
Abstract: A process is provided that allows the production of multi-layer coatings in which one or more topcoats can be applied to a porous basecoat to produce a uniform and defect-free coating layer. Specifically, a process is provided in which a liquid is applied to the basecoat prior to topcoating such that the air in the basecoat is removed prior to topcoating. This process can occur in-line with a simple apparatus described herein. An added benefit of this method is that it also allows the possibility of adding functionality or performing chemistry to a basecoat after the basecoat is dried and before the topcoat is applied in a single process. For example, the wetting fluid may contain, but is not limited to, surfactants, pH modifiers, polymers, crosslinkers, pigments, and/or dye stabilizers.
