Patent number: 6233934Abstract: A system for controlling a vehicle having an internal combustion engine and a variable geometry turbocharger includes a turbocharger sensor having an output indicative of a current turbocharger geometry Turbocharger geometry is varied by a controllable actuator. Control logic determines a desired turbocharger geometry based on the current engine conditions. Control logic determines an error signal by comparing the current turbocharger geometry to the desired turbocharger geometry. The actuator is controlled based on the error signal to change the current turbocharger geometry so as to track the desired turbocharger geometry.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2000Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Detroit Diesel CorporationInventors: Peter D. Church, Christopher M. Rieflin

Patent number: 5399064Abstract: Turbocharger compressor wheels rotate at high speeds resulting in noise which is emitted therefrom. To widen the performance band of turbochargers certain efficiency improvements have increased the noise emitted therefrom above the normal level of acceptability by the operator and spectators. The present device for reducing noise emitted therefrom includes a noise reduction system. The system includes a series of deflector fins forming a torturous path between the series of deflector fins associated with the turbocharger compressor inlet and form a torturous path in a secondary inlet. The series of deflector fins have a preestablished spacing therebetween to further enhance the reduction of noise emitted from the turbocharger.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1994Date of Patent: March 21, 1995Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Peter D. Church, Phillip B. Gordon, Jr.

Patent number: 5097707Abstract: A vibrating gyro operating on the principle of vibration waves traveling along a curved elastic surface transverse to the surface and being subjected to coriolis forces on rotation of the surface such as to shift the phase of the signal. The surface is provided by a spiral strip of metal having a vibration generator and detector at each end. Vibration waves are transmitted in both directions simultaneously and the phase difference between the received signals is determined. This gives a measure of the rotation rate. The gyro has great sensitivity and is particularly suited to gimballed systems. It therefore complements the vibrating gyro of U.K. Patent No. 2164749.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1990Date of Patent: March 24, 1992Assignee: GEC-Marconi LimitedInventor: Peter D. Patent number: 4920801Abstract: An accelerometer capable of sensing acceleration in three orthogonal directions while being formed in a single silicon wafer comprises three cantilever beams (2) etched from the wafer, each having a mass (3) asymmetric to the neutral plane (A) of the beam, and formed by etching away the beam (2) on one face only of the wafer. The beams are arranged at 120.degree. to each other so that their sensing axes (S) are orthogonal or approximately so. Deflection of the beams is measured by piezoelectric, electrostatic or electrodynamic effect and force feedback is preferably employed, again using one of these effects.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1988Date of Patent: May 1, 1990Assignee: The Marconi Company LimitedInventor: Peter D. Patent number: 4644793Abstract: A vibrational gyroscope is provided with a vibrating member in the form of a flexible annular shell extending from a flat flexible plate. In use, the flat plate is vibrated and excites radial vibrations in the lip of the annular shell. When the gyroscope is rotated about the shell axis, the nodes of these radial vibrations shift around the circumference of the lip, due to the action of Coriolis forces. The radial nodes of the vibrations in the plate shift similarly and their movement is detected by sensing means on the plate, giving an indication of the rotation rate.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: The Marconi Company LimitedInventor: Peter D.
