  • Publication number: 20070142612
Abstract: Polycarbonate is prepared by reactive extrusion on a reactive extruder. A method incorporates the steps of introducing a polycarbonate oligomer, an activated carbonate residue, and a transesterification catalyst to the extruder through a feed section. The extruder has the feed section, a polycarbonate exit section, and a reaction section between the feed section and the polycarbonate exit section. The reaction section is made up of at least one conveying section, kneading sections, and venting sections. The configuration of the reaction section requires that at least one venting section be disposed between each pair of kneading sections, and that the kneading sections and venting sections are selected such that the number of venting sections minus the number of kneading sections is greater than or equal to one. The method further contains the step of extruding the reaction components at a temperature in a range between 100° C. and 500° C.

(V) is a vent-conveying section, (C) is a conveying section, x is 1 or more, and n is 1 or 0. The extruder screw in the vent-conveying sections and the conveying sections in each devolatilization unit have conveying elements or conveying elements and mixing elements and no elements that create a melt seal in the devolatilization unit.

  • Publication number: 20070080000
Abstract: A wheel assembly for a small-scale machine includes a pair of opposing, individually-driven wheels, associated motors and possibly one or more gear assemblies. The motors receive separate drive signals from a control electronics subsystem of the wheel assembly. The motors can be connected to the wheels via the gear assemblies. Because the wheels are separately driven, driving the two wheel assemblies at similar or different speeds drives the wheel assembly over straight or curved paths. An orientation assembly allows the orientation of the wheels to the machine to be controllably altered. A height adjusting assembly allows the distance between the wheels and a point on the machine where the wheel assembly is attached to be adjusted. The rotational axis that the wheel assembly rotates about when re-oriented need not pass through either wheel of the wheel assembly. The wheels can be driven by control signals generated by on-board control electronics.

  • Patent number: 7193772
Abstract: A thermal nonlinear cell and method. The cell includes a substantially planar nonlinear medium and a mechanism for removing thermal energy from the medium in a direction substantially orthogonal to said medium. In one embodiment, the mechanism for removing thermal energy is a thermally conductive window mounted adjacent to the medium. Preferably, the mechanism includes plural thermally conductive windows between which the nonlinear medium is disposed. In the best mode, the windows are sapphire and the nonlinear medium is a fluid. The windows and the medium are transmissive with respect to first and second beams that interfere with each other and create an interference pattern in the cell. The interference pattern is sampled by a sampling hologram created within the multiple layers of the medium. The interference pattern is used via a sampling hologram to create a phase conjugate of a signal beam. The windows move thermal energy from the medium in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the medium.

  • Publication number: 20060294459
Abstract: The system for end-to-end content publishing using XML with an object dependency graph is based on the following two design principles: First, separation of content and style: Information stored in the content management system is independent on how it is going to be presented. The presentation style is encapsulated elsewhere and can be used to customize the look and feel based on the end-user preferences as well as the delivery methods and devices. Second, reusability of information content: By encapsulating common information in fragments and subfragments and making these fragments insertable in other fragments, thereby avoid scattering and duplication of information. This enables a user to restrict the edit operations to a limited number of relevant fragments, to affect global changes. In addition, the present invention provides data consistency and data integrity in the content management.

  • Patent number: 7114499
Abstract: A retracting eye drape assembly is disclosed for use around a patient's eye to seclude and seal off the operative field during eye surgery. The drape assembly includes a retraction member connected to the drape and configured to engage the patient's eyelid, an extension member connected to the retraction member or to the drape and configured to substantially enclose the patient's eyelid, and a retraction flap configured to secure the patient's eyelid in a substantially retracted position. A method of applying an eye drape assembly is disclosed. After application of the drape to the patient's face, and while the patient's eyelid is closed, the patient's eyelid is engaged by a retraction member connected to the drape and retracted. While retracted, the patient's eyelid is substantially enclosed to seclude the eyelid and eyelashes from the operational area. • Publication number: 20050252599
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus conveying a roll of liner stock bearing removably adhered components such as labels. The liner is pulled through the feeder by a capstan drive having opposed fluted nip rollers driven by a stepper motor. Advance of the stepper motor is controlled by a programmable electronic controller. The linered labels are led through a tensioner and around an acute-angle peeler edge which separates the labels from the liner. The peeling action advances a label onto a platform comprising a bed of rollers having an inherently low-adherence surface. Preferably the rollers are undercut to form circumferential ridges and reduce the surface area in contact with the label adhesive and to minimize adherence thereto. When peeling of a label is completed, the label has been advanced onto the roller bed to precisely the proper location for acquisition by a pick-and-place machine.
