Patent number: 8160911Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed toward providing a method utilizing project management software for creating a project plan utilizing a top-down strategy allowing a user to describe high-level objectives before filling in details for the underlying tasks of which the high-level objectives are comprised. As an alternative to basing summary task dates and durations solely on subtask data, the present invention allows a user to enter dates and duration values into summary tasks regardless of when the corresponding subtasks occur. By utilizing a top-down project management approach, embodiments of the present invention promote utilizing summary tasks as a starting point of project planning. Users are able to input high-level objectives of a project when more specific details of subtasks are unknown. Because summary task data is not rolled-up from the subtask data, a user may specify details such as dates and durations of subtasks at a later time.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2009Date of Patent: April 17, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Bonny P. Lau, Mohammad Yakoob Shahdad, Peter De Vries, Alice Pritikin Steinglass

Patent number: 8082274Abstract: A project management application provides an environment in which a user can transform a project sketch, which is based on mostly “freeform” data, into a defined project plan. The project management application facilitates the mixture of freeform task attribute values with structured attribute values of one or more project tasks. The project management application can utilize an internal calculation model to manage the relationships between task attribute values despite accepting freeform values for task attributes. The project management application calculates the attribute values to the extent allowed by the calculation model's recognition of the attribute values.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2007Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Alice Pritikin Steinglass, Peter de Vries

Patent number: 7958003Abstract: A method of and system for handling allocation of task work to resources with flexibly configured availability contours (work calendars) is disclosed. The method includes defining one or more base calendars, a resource calendar associated with each resource, wherein the resource calendar inherits from a base calendar. A calendar reader, a set of recurring exception records, and a set of effective weeks for each calendar are also defined. For a specific date, the method determines whether an exception exists in one of the base calendar and resource calendar, and if an exception exists, computes a cached effective week honoring the exception data from an associated recurring exception record. If an exception does not exist, a cached effective week for the resource is computed from a combination of the calendar's standard week and associated effective week records.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2004Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Peter De Vries, Jonathan S. Kaufthal

Publication number: 20090327020Abstract: A project management application is provided in which an active or not active task state for each task may be displayed in a user interface. The active or not active task state would indicate whether the task is inactive or active. If the state of a task is active, the project management application may treat the active task as a normal task in the project plan. If the state of a task is inactive, the project management application may treat the inactive task as having no effect and may ignore the inactive task for scheduling purposes in the project plan. The project management application may maintain and display information of the inactive tasks in the project plan. The project management application may display the inactive tasks in a different style from the active tasks in the user interface.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2008Publication date: December 31, 2009Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Peter de Vries, Alice Pritikin Steinglass

Publication number: 20090287523Abstract: Technologies are described herein for showing and correcting irregularities in a schedule. A project management application allows a user to manually define tasks within a schedule. The application evaluates the manually defined tasks to determine if the tasks cause an irregularity within the schedule. If so, the application provides one or more visual indications of the irregularity to the user. The application also provides functionality for allowing a user to resolve or ignore the irregularity.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2008Publication date: November 19, 2009Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: Bonny Pui Kwan Lau, Alice Pritikin Steinglass, Monica Estela Gonzalez Veron, Peter de Vries

Patent number: 4003149Abstract: A display device consists of rows and columns of display units each capable of either an illuminated or a dark condition whereby selection of suitable units for illumination can form a display character. The character can be caused to progress along the device by connecting the units in two groups of alternate units and by energizing these groups alternately to cause each unit momentarily to assume a master relationship towards the next downstream unit and hence transfers its state of illumination to such downstream unit. Energization is pneumatic, each unit containing a shutter that acts, when moved between two positions, both to change the state of such unit and as a valve controlling air flow to the next downstream unit.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1974Date of Patent: January 18, 1977Inventor: Peter de Vries
