  • Patent number: 4862861
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved capacitive discharge ignition system for a two cylinder internal combustion engine, such as an outboard marine engine. The system is adapted to be located beneath the flywheel of the engine and has overspeed and overheat protection. The overheat protection is of the type which is automatically deactivated after the overheat condition dissipates, but the deactivation will only occur when the operator slows the engine to a reduced speed before resuming normal operation.

  • Patent number: 4779598
Abstract: An engine apparatus comprising an internal combustion engine operable throughout a range of speeds including a minimum speed, a maximum speed, a first speed between the minimum speed and the maximum speed, and a second speed between the first speed and the maximum speed, the engine including an intake zone wherein relatively low pressure is created in response to engine operation, a primary fuel delivery system for delivering fuel from a fuel source to the engine for normal engine operation, a selectively actuatable secondary fuel delivery system for delivering enrichment fuel from a fuel source to the engine, and an electrical control circuit for selectively actuating the secondary fuel delivery system only when the pressure in the zone is below a predetermined level and the speed of the engine is above the first speed and below the second speed.

  • Patent number: 4671225
Abstract: The two cycle engine has a combustion chamber supplied with primary fuel for normal operation. An electrically operated priming system delivers fuel in addition to the primary fuel. A control regulates energization of the priming system. A momentary switch energizes the priming system when the switch closes and enables the control when the switch opens. The control causes the priming system to operate a predetermined period of time after the control is enabled but is subject to override by a switch responsive to engine temperature. Thus the priming system is shut down by the temperature responsive switch when engine temperature exceeds a predetermined value. The timing function of the control is provided by an integrated circuit chip wired as a timer. When the engine is started the timer chip is reset to zero and the timer starts timing when the momentary switch opens.

  • Patent number: 4659978
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a regulator circuit for regulating the charging of a battery from a source of alternating current wherein the regulator circuit includes a rectifier having first and second pairs of terminals. Alternating current, applied to the first pair of terminals, is converted to a unidirectional charge current for application to the battery through the second pair of terminals. Circuitry, responsive to the voltage at the first pair of terminals, inhibits the generation of the charge current when the voltage at the first pair of terminals reaches a predetermined threshold. Additional circuitry, also responsive to the voltage at the first pair of terminals, provides a low impedence path across the second pair of terminals. Upon the occurrence of an overvoltage condition, the production of charge current by the rectifier is inhibited and any capacitance coupled to the charge current output circuit is discharged through the low impedence path provided across the second pair of terminals.

  • Patent number: 4646696
Abstract: The spark plug ignition advance control for a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine has a spark ignition circuit associated with each cylinder. The circuit includes an SCR trigger operative to cause the ignition spark. A pulse generator is associated with each cylinder and puts out a control pulse to a latch gate outputing to the ignition circuit. The gate responds to a control pulse to latch in an enabled state. A frequency multiplier receives control pulses from the pulse generator and provides 360 reference pulses for each revolution of the engine. A counter responds to the control pulse to count said reference pulses. A ROM storing ignition timing data corresponding to throttle position. A throttle position sensor provides a control voltage which is applied to an A/D converter which outputs an address in the ROM and the ROM puts out the number of degrees by which the base throttle advance is to be modified and sets the counter to count said reference pulses to said number.

  • Patent number: 4641618
Abstract: A circuit protecting against overspeed and overheating in a two-cycle engine having a capacitive discharge ignition system which includes a charging coil in which voltage is induced when a magnet in the flywheel of the engine passes the coil. A rectifier bridge is connected to the coil and a capacitor connected to the bridge. An ignition coil and spark plug are associated with each cylinder of the engine. An electronic switch is associated with each ignition coil and has a trigger which responds to an applied trigger voltage to conduct and discharge the capacitor through the ignition coil. A trigger coil applies a trigger voltage to the triggers. The protective circuit includes a control responsive to engine speed. The control triggers one of the electronic switches to conduct and discharge the capacitor in response to a predetermined response speed. A circuit responsive to operation of an engine temperature responsive switch reduces the predetermined response speed of the control to a lower response speed.

  • Patent number: 4251848
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an electronic timing circuit which can be incorporated in an accelerator pump timing control, also disclosed herein. The timing circuit is adapted to be connected to the first and second power terminals of a DC supply and for energizing a load, for example, a fuel pump solenoid valve, during a predetermined timed cycle. The circuit includes a thyristor having an anode-cathode path adapted to be connected to the load so that when the thyristor is rendered conductive by a trigger pulse applied to the gate, current flows from the DC supply through the thyristor to energize the load and start the timed cycle. A transistor control circuit including a transistor connected in series relation with the anode-cathode path is operable for controlling the energizing current flow through the thyristor, subject to a relaxation oscillator included in the timing circuit.
