Abstract: Sulphonamide compounds of the formula ##STR1## are prepared by condensation of sulphonamides of the formulaR.sup.1 --SO.sub.2 --NH.sub.2-m-p R.sup.2.sub.m (--CH.sub.2 OH).sub.pwith formaldehyde and diols or diol monoethers of the formula ##STR2## in a molar ratio of sulphonamide: formaldehyde: diol or diol monether of 1:(1-p):0.5 to 1:(4-p):6 in the presence of a catalyst which splits off water and at temperatures of 80.degree. to 250.degree. C.,whereinR.sup.1 is phenyl, phenyl substituted phenyl, or alkyl substituted phenyl having 1 to 4 alkyl carbon atoms,R.sup.2 is alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms,R.sup.3 is hydrogen or alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms,R.sup.4 is hydrogen or alkyl having 1 to 18 carbon atoms,R.sup.5 is hydrogen, R.sup.2, ##STR3## R.sup.6 is R.sup.4 or ##STR4## m is zero or one, p is zero, one or two with the sum of m and p ranging from 0 to 2, andn is a number from 2 to 19q is one, two or threeand the compounds so obtained are used as modifying agents for melamine resins.

Abstract: Modified aminoplast resin comprising:(a) 60 to 99.5% by weight of an aminoplast precondensate which has been etherified with a lower alkanol to an extent not exceeding 10% and(b) 0.5 to 40% by weight of a modifying agent which comprises a mixture of (i) a water-soluble polyester prepared from carboxylic acids with at least one carboxyl and dihydric or polyhydric alcohols, and (ii) sufficient free diol or polyol whereby the mixture has a ratio of the sum of free and esterified hydroxyls of 0.8 to 4.5 moles for each mole of the sum of free and esterified carboxyls which resins are useful in impregnating webs for producing laminates and panels of wood-based materials.

Abstract: A carrier web coated with amino resin wherein at least one surface is resinated is produced by applying a spreadable amino resin dispersion containing 70-90% by weight of amino resin and 30-10% by weight of a liquid dispersant to at least one surface of an uncoated carrier web in an apparatus comprising:(a) unwinding station for unwinding uncoated carrier webs from rotatable supply rolls,(b) means for conveying the uncoated webs comprising a plurality of cooperating pressure rolls rotatably mounted in parallel relationship,(c) a coating means for applying a brushable amino resin dispersion to the web, and(d) a belt press for compression-molding and curing the coated web.

Abstract: An internal release agent and the process of its manufacture aids in releasing thermosetting aminoplast resins from molds and is an aqueous solution or dispersion containing(a) 5-30% by weight of a mixture of 50-100% by weight of a compound of the formula ##STR1## and 0 to 50% by weight of a compound of the formula ##STR2## and an acid salt selected from (b), (c) and (d) wherein (b) is 2-15% by weight of a compound of the formulaR.sup.4 --COOM.sup.3 or R.sup.4 --SO.sub.3 M.sup.3,(c) is 0.5 to 10% by weight of a compound of the formula ##STR3## and (d) is a mixture of (b) and (c);whereinR.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently of one another are straight-chain or branched alkyl or alkenyl having 5 to 12 carbon atoms or phenalkyl or naphthalkyl having 7 to 13 carbon atoms;R.sup.

Abstract: A latent curing agent for aminoplast resins produced by reacting diethanolamine with glycidol in a molar ratio of 1:(1 to 1.2) at 0.degree. to 90.degree. C. and then reacting the product with 0.5 to 1 mole of sulfur dioxide per mole of diethanolamine at 0.degree. to 90.degree. C.

Abstract: A melamine-formaldehyde resin useful for making coated wood-based materials and laminates and having a prolonged pot life comprises (a) melamine-formaldehyde precondensation product wherein the molar ratio of melamine:formaldehyde is 1:1.4 to 1:2.6 and (b) 0.1 to 1.0% by weight based on total solids, of an amine of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each identical or different alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-ethyl, 3-hydroxy-1-propyl, 3-hydroxy-2-propyl, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl or--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --NR.sup.1 R.sup.2,wherein said amine may be present entirely or partially in the form of its reaction product with the melamine-formaldehyde pre-condensation product.

Abstract: Spreadability and/or strength of water-setting inorganic bonding compositions are improved by incorporating in them a water-soluble condensation product of formaldehyde with a diphenol ##STR1## The condensation can also take place in the presence of a water-soluble sulfite, a water-soluble sulfamate, a water-soluble pyrosulfite, a phenol sulfonic acid or a naphthalene sulfonic acid.
