Abstract: Smoking articles having reduced ignition proclivity characteristics are disclosed. The smoking articles include a paper wrapper containing cellulosic fibers and filler particles. The paper wrappers are formed so that the filler particles form a concentration gradient throughout the thickness of the wrapper. More particularly, a greater concentration of filler particles are present at a first surface in comparison to the amount of filler particles present at the opposite surface. In accordance with the present disclosure, an ignition reducing composition is applied to the first surface. In this manner, treated areas having more uniform properties are formed.

Abstract: There is disclosed a method of producing a non-burning wrapper for use with smoking products. A non-burning wrapper is formed by treating a base paper with a solution consisting essentially of water, calcium chloride and a reactive size for paper; drying the thus treated paper; coating one side of the thus treated base paper with a solution consisting essentially of water, calcium carbonate, potassium silicate and sodium carboxymethycellulose; and drying the thus treated and coated paper to form a non-burning wrapper for use with smoking products.

Abstract: A wrapper for use in smoking articles such as cigarettes, and in particular, to a wrapper for smoking articles having a heat source, a physically separate aerosol generating means, and a mouthend piece. More specifically the invention relates to smoking articles which employ a substantially non-burnable paper used as an innerwrap and/or outerwrap which encircles at least a portion of the fuel element of such smoking articles.
