  • Patent number: 5114483
Abstract: A paving composition comprising about 80 to 97% by weight of an open-graded aggregate and about 3 to 20% asphalt, said composition being formed by successively mixing two asphalt-containing emulsions A and B with said aggretate wherein:emulsion A comprises about 40 to 75% by weight of a soft asphalt having a viscosity in the range of 50 to 1000 centistokes at 210.degree. F. and 0.05 to 5% by weight of a emulsifier, and water as a continuous phase of said emulsion to make up 100% by weight; andemulsion B comprises about 40 to 75% by weight of a hard asphalt having a penetration 5 to 25 dmm at 77.degree. F. and 0.05 to 5% by weight of a emulsifier, and water as a continuous phase of said emulsion to make up 100% by weight.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4985079
Abstract: Disclosed is a medium set cationic bituminous emulsion comprising, relative to the emulsion:a. about 40 to 75% by weight asphalt;b. 0.25 to 5% by weight of a cationic emulsifier;c. 0.1 to 0.5% by weight of a nonionic water-soluble thickening agent;d. 0 to 8% of a low-boiling hydrocarbon; ande. water as a continuous phase of said emulsion to make up 100% by weight;wherein said medium set emulsion when combined with open-graded aggregate produces a mix which has a thick coating of emulsion on said aggregate surface and said mix is workable and results in minimum runoff.

  • Patent number: 4822427
Abstract: Disclosed is a cationic bituminous emulsion comprising relative to the emulsion about 40 to 70% by weight asphalt, 0.25 to 5% by weight of a cationic emulsifier, 0.1-0.5% by weight of a water-soluble thickening agent, 0-8% of a low-boiling hydrocarbon, and water as a continuous phase of said emulsion to make up 100% by weight. The emulsion is particularly useful for open-graded roads.

  • Patent number: 4523957
Abstract: An open-graded emulsified asphalt paving mix is provided comprising a major portion of open-graded aggregate and a minor portion of cationic or anionic bituminous emulsion, the mix containing a minor portion of a polyelectrolyte having the opposite electric charge from that of the asphalt emulsifier which imparts excellent water resistance properties to pavement prepared from the mix. A method for producing the polyelectrolyte in situ is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4423088
Abstract: A method for depositing asphalt from an asphalt emulsion onto an aggregate is disclosed comprising wetting the aggregate with water containing between about 0.01 weight percent and about 1.0 weight percent of coupling agent selected to have charge opposite to the charge of said asphalt emulsion and applying said asphalt emulsion to the wetted aggregate.
