  • Patent number: 7100370
Abstract: The invention involves a process for controlling the rotational speed of a drive motor during a start-up period, in a drive train, containing at least one starter element that can be coupled to the drive motor, in a rotationally fixed manner, in the form of a hydrodynamic coupling, containing a primary blade wheel and a secondary blade wheel, which form together at least one toroid-shaped working space. According to the invention, the rotational speed of the drive motor is set as a function of the power that can be consumed by the hydrodynamic coupling. The consumable power can be controlled or regulated.

  • Patent number: 5944160
Abstract: A drive unit for a motor vehicle having an engine; a transmission featuring a transmission housing; and a retarder featuring a rotor and a stator. A retarder shaft is provided that is supported by two bearings which are offset along the axial length of the retarder shaft. At least one of the bearings ("outside bearing") is supported by a wall ("outside wall") of the transmission housing. The retarder shaft protrudes freely beyond the outside wall of the transmission housing. Disposed on the retarder shaft, outside the outer bearing, on the outside wall, is a sealing component. The sealing component seals the clearance between the retarder (or pinion) shaft and the outside wall, preventing passage therethrough of the transmission oil and the operating medium of the retarder.

  • Patent number: 5924337
Abstract: A drive unit for a vehicle which includes an engine, transmission and hydrodynamic retarder having a rotor and a stator. A retarder shaft is rotatably supported by two bearings and extends through the housing of the transmission. A sealing element provides a seal between the retarder shaft and the transmission housing for separating the operating medium of the hydrodynamic retarder from either the transmission lubricant or the lubricant for one of the two shaft bearings.

  • Patent number: 5829562
Abstract: The invention relates to a drive unit for a motor vehicle having a hydrodynamic retarder and a drive train with an engine and a transmission. The hydrodynamic retarder is comprised of a rotor impeller wheel and a stator impeller wheel and is coordinated with the main drive train in a manner such that the rotor impeller wheel of the hydrodynamic retarder is driven by the drive train. The operating fluid of the hydrodynamic retarder is a medium used for cooling the vehicle and a clutch is arranged between the drive train and the hydrodynamic retarder.

  • Patent number: 5819697
Abstract: The present invention involves a drive unit, specifically a drive unit for a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine, a cooling system with fan and a hydrodynamic retarder with a stator, rotor and housing. The retarder is located within a space bounded on one side by the front of the crankcase, on a second side by the fan shaft which runs parallel to the engine shaft, and on a third side by the rear edge of the fan wheel. Viewed from the front, the retarder is substantially located within the fly circle of the fan wheel whereby the air flow generated by the fan wheel removes heat, generated by braking actions, from the housing of the retarder.

  • Patent number: 5758619
Abstract: The present invention involves a drive unit, specifically a drive unit for a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine, a cooling system with fan, a transmission and a hydrodynamic retarder with a stator, rotor and housing. The retarder rotor is mounted on either the engine shaft or a crankshaft journal which is coaxial with the engine shaft.

The retarder housing comprises a bell and a cover body. The cover body defines a chamber having two outlets and an inlet. The chamber being in fluid communication with the working space of the retarder.

  • Patent number: 5657838
Abstract: A drive unit for vehicles with an engine and a gearbox, and with a hydrodynamic retarder. The retarder is in constant drive connection with the engine. The unit includes a coolant circuit whose coolant is at the same time the working medium of the retarder, and the retarder can be utilized as a coolant pump. The retarder is arranged before the gearbox, and the retarder can be united with an engine brake to an overall brake unit (OBU). The overall brake unit is configured such that the retarder can in a braking operation engage sooner than the engine brake.
