  • Patent number: 6859593
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an optical fiber ribbon comprising the following steps: arranging N groups of optical fibers so that the fibers in any one group are disposed in the same plane, applying a first layer of a first liquid resin settable under the action of UV type radiation onto each group of optical fibers to form first casings, applying a second layer of a second liquid resin settable under the action of UV type radiation disposed to link together the adjacent first casings, and applying a single irradiation step to the second layer and the first layers using UV type radiation in order to form the first matrices and to form the “link” second matrix.

  • Patent number: 6314224
Abstract: An optical fiber cable including a cable jacket having a longitudinally extending inner cavity with a non-circular cross section, and at least two longitudinally extending strength members, wherein the non-circular cross section is disposed so that a minor axis thereof is substantially aligned with a line joining the at least two longitudinally extending strength members.

  • Patent number: 6134363
Abstract: A method for accessing optical fibers in a midspan region of an optical fiber cable is disclosed. The method of the present invention begins by providing an optical fiber cable having at least one optical fiber disposed within a channel defined by a jacket, the jacket having two reinforcing rods embedded therein. Next, the jacket material adjacent to the reinforcing rods is removed to partially expose the reinforcing rods. Then, the jacket material is cut substantially semi-circumferentially between the reinforcing rods at a leading position. Finally, the jacket material is pulled at the leading position radially away from the cable so as to cause the jacket material disposed between the reinforcing rods and the channel to separate. This will permit access to the optical fibers disposed in the jacket through an opening resulting from the separation of the jacket material.

  • Patent number: 6091871
Abstract: The reinforced optical fiber cable of unitube structure comprises a protective tube for protecting optical fibers, a reinforcing layer, and reinforcing cords, together with an outer sheath around the protective tube. In the cable the protective tube is of corrugated tubular structure. Such a cable is particularly suited for use as a long distance transmission cable.

  • Patent number: 6035087
Abstract: An optical unit (5a, 5b) comprising a plurality of optical fibers (2) grouped together in a tube (3a, 3b) and optionally assembled into one or more ribbons inside tube. The tube (3a, 3b) has a Young's modulus less than 200 MPa and a Shore A hardness less than 90 at a temperature of approximately +20.degree. C. and a Young's modulus less than 2000 MPa at a temperature of approximately -40.degree. C. A fiber optic cable (10, 20) comprising at least one such optical unit (5a, 5b). • Patent number: 6002824
Abstract: A fiber optic cable comprises a plurality of packages each made up of a plurality of optical fiber ribbons. The packages are arranged in a tight structure incorporated in a polymer resin so that the packages themselves constitute reinforcements that impart strength to the cable and prevent curvature of the optical fibers due to variations in temperature. This eliminates the need to incorporate any central and/or peripheral reinforcing member into the cable.
