  • Patent number: 6591709
Abstract: An apparatus for releasably locking the tilt steering column assembly. The apparatus includes a housing, a lock member, a pawl, a rack and a rack trunnion. The rack and the rack trunnion, which are slidable relative to one another, form a link that determines the angle to which the tilt steering column is adjusted. The pawl is pivotably coupled to the rack trunnion and pivotable between a first position, wherein teeth formed on the pawl meshingly engage teeth formed on the rack to fix the position of the rack trunnion relative to the rack, and a second position, wherein the teeth of the pawl are rotated out of engagement with the teeth of the rack to permit the rack trunnion and the rack to be moved relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 6439607
Abstract: A vehicle steering mechanism can be supported for controlled collapse in crash situations, by constructing the support mechanism as a rigid assembly having a metal die casting as a principal component. The rigid die casting transmits a shock force from the vehicle steering wheel to shearable fasteners that connect the die casting to a mounting structure on the vehicle. Undesired resilience or spring in the steering shaft support mechanism is eliminated, such that the system has a desired predictability in frontal crash situations.

  • Patent number: 5823062
Abstract: Apparatus for releasably locking the tilt steering column assembly of an automotive vehicle in an adjusted position. A rack on the steering column assembly is engaged by a pawl to lock the steering column assembly in the position selected by the driver. A bracket is provided to hold the pawl engaged with the rack and prevent it from becoming disengaged. The tilt of the steering column can be re-adjusted by moving the bracket so that the pawl can disengage the rack. A wedge is provided for retaining the bracket in its position holding the pawl engaged with the rack. The rack has an arcuate series of teeth engageable with an arcuate series of pawl teeth. The pawl teeth includes a group of intermediate teeth of full size for full engagement with the rack teeth and at each end of the group of intermediate teeth a group of truncated teeth of shorter length than the teeth of the intermediate group to enable engagement and disengagement of the pawl and rack teeth without interference or binding.
