Publication number: 20070016727Abstract: Multiple applications request data from multiple storage units over a computer network. The data is divided into segments and each segment is distributed randomly on one of several storage units, independent of the storage units on which other segments of the media data are stored. At least one additional copy of each segment also is distributed randomly over the storage units, such that each segment is stored on at least two storage units. This random distribution of multiple copies of segments of data improves both scalability and reliability. When an application requests a selected segment of data, the request is processed by the storage unit with the shortest queue of requests. Random fluctuations in the load applied by multiple applications on multiple storage units are balanced nearly equally over all of the storage units.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 18, 2006Publication date: January 18, 2007Inventors: Eric Peters, Stanley Rabinowitz, Herbert Jacobs, Peter Fasciano

Patent number: 7046251Abstract: A non-linear editor is connected to video processing equipment through a serial digital video interface to edit high definition (HD) television video data. The non-linear editor includes a randomly accessible, computer-readable and re-writeable storage medium that stores a plurality of sequences of HD digital images representing a frame or field of HD motion video data. The non-linear editor provides a configuration control signal to identify processing to be performed on the HD video data and defines a video program to be rendered using the stored HD digital images. An input serial digital interface and an output serial digital interface in the non-linear editor provide the HD video data to be edited. A multiformat video router controls the HD video data sent between the non-linear editor and the video processing equipment. The router is video interconnected to the video processing equipment and to the serial digital interfaces of the non-linear editor.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2003Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Avid Technology, Inc.Inventors: Morton Tarr, Peter Fasciano, Craig R. Patent number: 6977673Abstract: A portable moving picture recording device includes switching control to enable multiple data flow configurations. Two output encoders receive either composite or component digital video signals. The component video signals can come from one of three sources: decoded composite video, component video, and a random-access storage device. Inputs to a composite video analog-to-digital converter and a genlock decoder may be switched between at least two outputs, including a camera video and external video sources. The digital component signal may also be recorded onto the random access recording medium. These data paths are provided in a portable moving picture recording device, in combination with some editing capability.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Avid Technology, Inc.Inventors: James A. Publication number: 20050021258Abstract: A display color calibration system uses a spectrophotometer or other sensor connect to a computer along with a computer program running on the computer to provide a mechanism to calibrate and standardize the color performance of display devices used by video applications. Such display devices include both computer displays connected to the computer and video displays connected to the computer. In particular, test colors are presented as an ordered set of samples controlled by the computer program and are presented via a video application to the display devices. The video application may be, for example, software for a digital nonlinear video editing system (NLE) or any other video playback engine on the computer. Once calibrated, these display devices can present a gamut of colors as a standard color space. This calibration improves the display accuracy and consistency for critical viewing and color evaluation of images.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 22, 2004Publication date: January 27, 2005Inventor: Peter Fasciano

Patent number: 6757010Abstract: Systems and methods for correlating color correction instruction between two color correcting devices are disclosed. The method includes performing a nulling test on a representation a first device has of a known standard and retaining the results of the test. A second color correcting device performs a nulling test on the same known standard and the results of this test are retained. From the results of these two tests a color correction instruction of one of the devices may be converted to a color correction instruction on the other device so that substantially the same color correction effect is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2001Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: Avid Technology, Inc.Inventor: Peter Fasciano

Patent number: 6728682Abstract: Audio associated with a video program, such as an audio track or live or recorded commentary, may be analyzed to recognize or detect one or more predetermined sound patterns, such as words or sound effects. The recognized or detected sound patterns may be used to enhance video processing, by controlling video capture and/or delivery during editing, or to facilitate selection of clips or splice points during editing.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2001Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Avid Technology, Inc.Inventor: Peter Fasciano

Patent number: 6339531Abstract: A dockable equipment container includes an outer shell of a durable material and an inner metallic container. The inner container is suspended within the outer shell by blocks of energy absorbent material, such as SORBATHANE. The dockable equipment container further includes a connector at one end, which is covered by a protective door. When mated with external equipment, the protective door is moved to an open position by an alignment device, such as alignment pins, pressing against an end of the protective door. The alignment pins mate with corresponding alignment holes for ensuring that the connector properly mates with a corresponding connector in the external equipment. The dockable equipment container may contain various electronic equipment, which communicates with the external equipment through the connector. The electronic equipment may include disk drives, which are protected from the environment and from shock by the construction of the dockable equipment container.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1999Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Assignee: Avid Technology, Inc.Inventors: James A.
