  • Patent number: 6334518
Abstract: A device to absorb impact energy between an impacted component and a component to be protected from the effects of the impact (in particular between the bumper bracket (1) and the frame side rail of a vehicle). The device has a deforming section (3) to plastically absorb energy (that is between the bumper bracket (1) and the frame rail), and a hydraulic part to elastically absorb energy. The hydraulic part is before the deforming part (3) (viewed in direction of impact) inside the frame side rail. With this design, it is possible to have a large plunger diameter for the hydraulic section and an aluminum construction.

  • Patent number: 6019273
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing the frame of the backrest of a motor vehicle seat from an originally straight metallic profile part which preferably has an I-shaped cross sectional area and which is bent into a U shape. In the middle part only one opening is formed in web (1), then it is closed again by the pressure of two compression jaws which move chords (2) towards one another in this middle part. In doing so opposite edge areas of the opening form joint (4). The adjacent planar areas of the web are joined to one another preferably by welding at this joint.

  • Patent number: 5172948
Abstract: Shock absorber for motor vehicles having an outside tube and at least one inside tube, the tube lying on the inside projecting out of the outside tube and the part of the inside tube lying within the outside tube having a larger outside diameter than the inside diameter of the outside tube interacting with it. The tube lying on the outside has two bores going through it perpendicular to its lengthwise axis, and at least one of the bores is placed in the area containing the inside tube, and the inside tube has, in the area of this bore in the outside tube, continuous lengthwise slots that overlap the borehole. Holes are present on the car body that overlap the crosswise bores and screws are provided that go through the holes on the car body and the crosswise bores. The shock absorber absorbs force through deformation of the outside tube by the inside tube as it is pushed by an impact on a free end of the inside tube which may carry a vehicle bumper, for example.

  • Patent number: 5090755
Abstract: An impact absorber between a bumper and the base of a vehicle has ribs which progressively shear away against the flange during impact, this flange being originally connected and in one piece with the cylindrical body formed with the ribs and being separated therefrom by a weakened zone defined by an annular groove or notch formed in the weakened zone opposite the end of the body connected to the bumper.

  • Patent number: 5066064
Abstract: A vehicle door, for a passenger automobile which in the closed position has its door frame juxtaposed with the outwardly facing part of the threshold for the door opening of the vehicle body, is provided at the level of this threshold with a horizontal strut which can be corrugated for controlled collapse and extends normal to the door plane.

  • Patent number: 5056861
Abstract: An impact girder for a door or side wall of a passenger vehicle which has a hollow space extending along the length of a beam having compression and tension flanges. In the region between a central zone and the ends of the beam, the compression flange is formed with a pair of slots providing control deformation of the beam upon application of a force to the central region.

  • Patent number: 5046777
Abstract: An impact girder for a door or side wall of a motor vehicle body has a longitudinally extending hollow space. Along outer edge portions the compression flange overhangs the lateral webs and this overhanging portion is raised relative to the recessed portions between the lateral webs so that, upon impact, the edge portions buckle outwardly and tear away from the remainder of the compression flange which buckles inwardly.

  • Patent number: 5039160
Abstract: A side-collision protective beam for a motor vehicle comprises an elongated outer flange extending along a longitudinal axis and having a pair of opposite ends, an elongated inner flange spaced from and extending parallel to the outer flange and having a pair of opposite ends, and a web transversely interconnecting the flanges. The flanges have at least one of the respective ends respective end portions extending longitudinally past the web and the end portion of the outer flange is bent transversely to the axis toward and lies flat against the end portion of the inner flange. A fastener transverses both end portions and is secured in the motor vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4919473
Abstract: A beam or girder in a side wall or door of a passenger motor vehicle and adapted to provide resistance to lateral collision has a compression flange thereof provided with openings in the form of bores and/or notches so that brittle fracture of the beam can be avoided when the elastic limit is exceeded.
