  • Patent number: 5509711
Abstract: A method of installing an auto windshield molding in place about the peripheral edge of the windshield in a trapezoidal windshield opening, during which the converging sides of the windshield opening, which provide the trapezoidal shape, also provide a camming-type function by compressing the molding length portions contacting these sides, the compression more particularly effectuating a shape change in the molding which enhances the firmness of its gripping engagement to the windshield peripheral edge.

  • Patent number: 5489354
Abstract: A two-stage method of affixing an elastomeric molding about the peripheral edge of an auto windshield, the first stage being non-adhesively by engaging the two top corners of the windshield in notches provided for this purpose in the depending leg of the molding, and the second stage being adhesively using previously deposited urethane in the gap between the windshield with molding and the slightly oversized auto windshield opening, wherein the first stage affixation enables the molding to protect the windshield edge from chipping or like damage, and the second stage affixation bonds the windshield permanently in place.

  • Patent number: 5480207
Abstract: A molding preaffixed about the periphery of an auto windshield using urethane bondable to glass has a shortcoming by virtue of being inert to any bonding to the rubber construction material of the molding, which is overcome using a substitute mechanical interlock between the urethane and molding, the molding rubber stem being embodied with a cavity for molding the urethane in bonding relation to the glass windshield and the resulting molded shape of the urethane providing structural features for engagement by the molding, i.e., the engaged structural features being the mechanical interlock.

  • Patent number: 5478132
Abstract: An auto window molding for mounting an auto window in a window opening defined by a generally L-shaped body flange via a peripheral molding attached thereto includes a peripherally-extending, generally U-shaped base section receivable about the peripheral edge of an auto window. The U-shaped base section has a central wall, a top wall and a bottom wall, and a resilient detachable arm secured to the base section which normally overlies and is spaced from the bottom wall. The arm has a free end which extends past the bottom wall and which normally engages a bottom surface of an auto window when the U-shaped base section is received about the peripheral edge thereof whereupon the bottom wall, detachable arm, and auto window cooperatively define therebetween a mold cavity into which a curable adhesive may be introduced which, upon curing, provides the auto window with a peripheral molding secured thereto molded in situ.

  • Patent number: 5470422
Abstract: The use of "limp", i.e. 70-durometer Ethylene Propylene Di-Monomer ("EPDM"), construction material for an auto windshield insert molding which is installed in the gap between the windshield and the oversized windshield opening by a method contemplating manual adjustment of the molding crown to any height variations while the stem of the molding is being engaged by urethane that is curing, such that previously required hold-down adhesive strips are obviated as were required when using flexible construction material that resisted manual adjustments of the crown. By eliminating hold-down adhesive strips there is no subsequent removal thereof required which inadvertently caused paint removal and other surface marring.

  • Patent number: 5467522
Abstract: Safety glass, known to consist of glass panels having an interposed plastic ply to minimize shattering, is converted by the within method into an auto windshield having a wiper deicing function by the application of resistive conductive coatings forming a circuit along the glass panel bottom edges insulated by the plastic ply, which circuit is heat-generating when connected to the auto battery and thus effective to deice the wiper which in an at-rest position is near enough to the heat source to benefit therefrom for the purposes intended.

  • Patent number: 5457913
Abstract: An auto ventilation side window in a recessed opening to minimize adverse aerodynamic wind resistance, in which the flange periphery which bounds the recess is advantageously used also as a flexturing support for an opening pivotal traverse of the window, the angle of the traverse being confined to an extent that does not result in a rupturing of the construction material of the window-supporting flange.

  • Patent number: 5429858
Abstract: A corrugated paper retainer and adjustable spacer for adhesively applying a glass panel to a support surface, especially an automotive body panel defining a window opening, which includes a corrugated paper retainer assembly composed of a top ply having an adhesive-covered top surface, a bottom ply having an adhesive-covered bottom surface, and a crushable corrugated intermediate ply sandwiched and bonded between the top and bottom plies. The bottom ply is bondable to the support surface via the adhesive covered bottom surface thereof and the top surface is bondable to the glass panel via the adhesive bonded top surface thereof. The retainer assembly is variably compressible via its crushable corrugated ply to adjust the spaced distance of the glass panel with respect to the support surface. A method of installing a glass panel is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5410294
Abstract: Mandated by law in most states is an original equipment manufacture (OEM) auto rear window brake-operated light which displays itself as a steady light signal when the brake is operated. This same light is now given a flashing mode to indicate the "cruise control" is on so that an approaching motorist is encouraged to make a safe lane change rather than to "tailgate".

  • Patent number: 5145974
Abstract: A continuous process for producing nitratoalkyl-substituted cyclic ethers which consists of (a) cocurrently mixing a stream of N.sub.2 O.sub.5 and a stream of a hydroxyalkyl-substituted cyclic ether each dissolved in an inert organic solvent, followed by (b) rapidly separating the nitric acid and nitratoalkyl coproducts before they can react together to rupture the ether ring. Step (b) is conveniently performed by quenching the product stream within approximately 15 seconds of its formation, in a basic aqueous solution into which the nitric acid is transferred from the organic phase and is neutralized. Examples of products which may be prepared by this process are nitratoalkyl-substituted oxiranes and oxetanes.

  • Patent number: 5136062
Abstract: A method of preparing a nitrate ester of an epoxy alcohol, which consists of reacting an epoxy alcohol with N.sub.2 O.sub.5 in an inert solvent at a temperature of -10.degree. C. to -40.degree. C., followed by quenching the reaction mixture in aqueous solution. Quenching separates the nitric acid and nitrate ester coproducts into aqueous and organic phases respectively to prevent subsequent reaction between the two. Reaction between the nitric acid coproduct and epoxy alcohol reagent to produce acyclic contaminants is supressed by adding the epoxy alcohol to excess N.sub.2 O.sub.5, thereby rapidly converting available alcohol to nitrate ester.
