Abstract: Modified polyvinyl acetals are prepared by saponification of 1-alkylvinyl acetate-vinyl acetate copolymers, which contain 1-alkylvinyl acetate/vinyl acetate in a weight ratio of 1/99-40/60 and subsequent acetalization the saponification products containing at least 80% units of vinyl alcohol and 1-alkyl vinyl alcohol with one or more aliphatic aldehydes with 1-6 C atoms under acid catalysis in an aqueous and/or organic medium; as well as to a method for the manufacture and the use thereof, especially in printing inks.

Abstract: The invention relates to core/shell copolymer dispersions whose shell comprises hydrolyzable organosilicon comonomers, the shell consisting of a copolymer comprising,a) from 70 to 95% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl esters of which from 20 to 80% by weight, based on the overall weight of a), have a water-solubility of not more than 2 g/l and from 80 to 20% by weight, based on the overall weight of a), have a water-solubility of at least 10 g/l,b) from 5 to 25% by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated, functional and water-soluble monomers including a proportion of from 25 to 100% by weight, based on the overall weight of b), of unsaturated carboxylic acids, andc) from 0.01 to 10% by weight of one or more olefinically unsaturated, hydrolyzable silicon compounds of the general formula R.sup.1 --Si(OR.sup.2).sub.

Abstract: The invention provides a coating composition for coating aluminum which is based on vinyl ester copolymers and an organic solvent, the vinyl ester copolymer comprisinga) 20 to 90 parts by weight of a vinyl ester of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 1 to 5 C atoms,b) 0 to 70 parts by weight of a vinyl ester of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids which have 9 to 10 C atoms and a quaternary C atom in the .alpha.-position relative to the carboxyl group,c) 0.05 to 10 parts by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids having 3 to 10 C atoms or anhydrides thereof andd) 0 to 50 parts by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the homopolymers of which have a glass transition temperature above 30.degree. C.The coating composition is free of chlorine-containing polymers and also avoids the necessity for using a chlorine-containing primer.
