Patent number: 12188690Abstract: A solar receiver and associated components, systems and methods for use with a concentrated solar power plant. The solar receiver including a heat-absorbing solid body, an optical arrangement configured to direct light on to the heat-absorbing solid body, and a heat exchanger cowl proximate the heat-absorbing solid body arranged to provide a flow of working fluid over the rotor. In use, the light from the optical arrangement heats the heat-absorbing solid body which in turn heats the working fluid proximate the heat-absorbing solid body. The heat-absorbing solid body is movable relative to the optical arrangement from a first position to a second position such that the heat-absorbing solid body does not overheat.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2021Date of Patent: January 7, 2025Assignee: ODQA RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES LIMITEDInventors: Peter Ireland, Tsun Holt Wong, Gediz Karaca, Ahmed Refaat, Chiang Ngai, Edwin Wood

Publication number: 20240328387Abstract: Systems and methods of predicting performance of one or more wind turbines are provided. Exemplary methods include entering data inputs and analyzing and estimating the data inputs. The data inputs include nacelle position information and/or wind condition information. A wake model is determined based on the analysis and estimating of the data inputs. Wind turbine behavior predictions are generated including predicted power outputs of the wind turbines and predicted effects of waking on the predicted power outputs. The data inputs can be adjusted to improve the wind turbine behavior predictions, and the wake model can be corrected by machine learning. By focusing on an observable quantity—power—based on other observable quantities like wind speed, yaw error, nacelle position, disclosed embodiments enable optimization to start immediately after the hardware and software are installed, and as the controller operates more in the field, additional training and validation data are collected.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 28, 2024Publication date: October 3, 2024Inventors: Peter Bachant, Peter Ireland, Brian Burrows, Venkatakrishna Vadlamudi, Nathan L. Patent number: 11592241Abstract: Apparatus and methods for jet impingement cooling are provided. In one arrangement, a fluid channelling structure engages against a target surface to define a flow volume. Fluid is jetted onto the target surface from inlets and is removed via outlets. Flow directing features form a plurality of channels with no straight paths between inlets and outlets. A time averaged flow direction of fluid in contact with each flow directing feature is more nearly perpendicular to a direction of jetting of the fluid from a nearest inlet than parallel to the direction of jetting One or more pairs of the inlets and outlets are such that a majority of fluid jetted onto the target surface from the inlet of the pair will be removed from the flow volume through the outlet of the same pair.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2019Date of Patent: February 28, 2023Assignee: OXFORD UNIVERSITY INNOVATION LIMITEDInventors: Jack Nicholas, Tsun Holt Wong, Robert Pearce, Peter Ireland

Patent number: 8870124Abstract: A method of improving aerodynamic performance of foils by the application of conformal, elastomeric vortex generators. The novel use of elastomers allows the application of various forms of vortex generators to sections that have been problematic from engineering and cost considerations. A novel and efficient vortex generator profile is identified, which develops an additional co rotating vortex at low energy expenditure. The mechanisms allow for the application of transverse vortex generators, or Gurney Flaps/Lift Enhancement Tabs/Divergent Trailing Edges, to propellers, rotorblades, and to wings/flaps/control trailing edges. Cove Tabs are additionally described using an elastomeric transverse vortex generator to achieve performance improvements of a high lift device.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2010Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Inventor: Peter Ireland
