  • Publication number: 20030086654
Abstract: An optical device is provided comprising a gain section adapted to emit radiation at a radiation wavelength, a coupling section adjacent to the gain section for transitioning radiation between an active waveguide and a passive waveguide, and a passive section adjacent to the coupling section supporting a single-lobed optical mode in the passive waveguide at the radiation wavelength. The passive waveguide has an index of refraction and dimension such that the confinement of the radiation within the active waveguide in the gain section is reduced.

  • Publication number: 20030087634
Abstract: A communication system is disclosed that allows high data-rate transmission of data between components. N-bit parallel data is transmitted in K-frequency separated channels on the transmission medium so as to fully take advantage of the overall bandwidth of the transmission medium. Additionally, a cross-channel interference filter in a receiver section corrects for cross-channel interference in the communication system. As a result, a very high data-rate transmission can be accomplished with low data-bit transmission on individual channels. A transmitter system and a receiver system are described for the communication system.

  • Publication number: 20030087675
Abstract: An advanced telecommunications system is provided for the recognizing of spoken commands over a cellular telephone, satellite telephone, or personal communications network. In the cellular application, for example, a Speech Recognition System interconnects either internally with or as an external peripheral to a cellular telecommunications switch. The Speech Recognition System includes an administrative subsystem, a call processing subsystem, a speaker-dependent recognition subsystem, a speaker-independent recognition subsystem, and a data storage subsystem. The Speech Recognition System also allows for increased efficiency in the cellular telephone network by integrating with the switch or switches as a shared resource. The administrative subsystem of the Speech Recognition System is used to keep statistical logs of pertinent call information. Pre-recorded instructional messages are stored in the memory of the call processing subsystem for instructing a user on his or her progress in using the system.

  • Publication number: 20030088349
Abstract: A vehicle rollover detection apparatus and method are provided for detecting an overturn condition of the vehicle. The rollover detection apparatus includes an angular rate sensor sensing angular rate of the vehicle, and a vertical accelerometer for sensing vertical acceleration of the vehicle. A controller processes the sensed angular rate signal and integrates it to produce an attitude angle. The vertical acceleration signal is processed to determine an inclination angle of the vehicle. The rollover detection apparatus adjusts the attitude angle as a function of the inclination angle and compares the adjusted attitude angle and the processed angular rate signal to a threshold level to provide a vehicle overturn condition output signal. Additionally, the rollover detection apparatus detects a near-rollover event and adjusts the variable threshold in response thereto to prevent deployment of a vehicle overturn condition, thus providing immunity to such events.

  • Patent number: 6560211
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a data rate associated with the transmission of information from a base station to a mobile station in a mobile radio communication system. The mobile station alternately receives information from a base station either in a variable rate mode or a fixed rate mode. The transmission rate from a base station in the variable rate mode varies between successive data transmit intervals, and the transmission rate from a base station in the fixed rate mode remains fixed between successive data transmit intervals. Data is transmitted from a first base station to the mobile station in the variable rate mode until the first base station is unable to receive variable data rate control information from the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6560081
Abstract: An ESD protection circuit that can be easily configured to provide ESD event protection against a range of ESD event voltages. The circuit is also compatible with high frequency ICs. The ESD protection circuit includes an input terminal configured to receive an ESD event signal and a diode sub-circuit. The diode sub-circuit includes at least one diode (e.g., either a single diode or a plurality of diodes connected in series or parallel configuration), a diode input node and a diode output node. The diode sub-circuit is configured to receive an ESD event signal from the input terminal and to operate under forward bias conditions to provide a diode output signal at the diode output node. The circuit also includes a bipolar junction transistor (e.g., a Si—Ge bipolar junction transistor) with a base, a collector and an emitter. The emitter is configured to receive the ESD event signal from the input terminal, while the base is configured to receive the diode output signal from the diode output node.

  • Patent number: 6560445
Abstract: A new modulation/demodulation method and apparatus are described for use with RF communication. A transmitter (1001T) modulates information onto a plurality of carrier signals transmitted simultaneously over a corresponding plurality of frequencies using cepstral modulation. A receiver (1003R) receives the plurality of carrier signals and demodulates the signals utilizing cepstral demodulation. Receiver (1003R) monitors the carrier signals and in response to predetermined conditions selects a cepstral constellation to be utilized. Receiver (1003R) provides the cepstral constellation information to a transmitter (1003T) that, in turn, transmits the cepstral constellation information to a receiver (1001R), in turn, provides the cepstral constellation information to transmitter (100T). Transmitter (1001T) utilizes the selected cepstral constellation information to modulate the next transmission of the plurality of carrier signals.

  • Publication number: 20030083078
Abstract: A signaling message processing and routing node transmits and receives short message service (SMS) data packets via a communications network. The routing node includes an SMS message discrimination module that determines whether an unwanted or spam SMS message is being sent to a receiving or called party. Unwanted SMS messages are discarded and consequently not delivered to their intended recipient. As a result, mobile subscribers and network nodes are shielded from unwanted SMS traffic. The SMS message discrimination module also includes a provisioning interface that allows end users and network operators to control SMS message discrimination criteria.
