Patent number: 8128513Abstract: The present invention is directed to a golf club head with an improved striking surface. The grooves are machined into the strike surface with tight tolerances. The grooves have sharp edges, radiused ends, and a draft angle between about 2° and 12°. The striking face is machined such that it has a uniform texture with a roughness of more than 40 Ra. The face may be selectively textured to enhance certain shots that the golfer may perform. This may include providing a plurality of distinct sets of texturing to accommodate a plurality of different shots. The grooves may contain a plurality of portions, including a radiused or angled portion, a portion having substantially parallel walls, a portion having a v-shape, and a curved portion. The grooves may also be characterized by various dimensions, including draft angle, inclusive side wall angle, width, depth, cross-sectional area, spacing, and pitch ratio.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2011Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Peter J. Patent number: 8128510Abstract: A golf club head having a multi-material face. The golf club head has a hard, wear resistant material as the ball-impacting face surface coupled to a softer material, allowing the multi-material face to be joined to a soft body material such that the body can be bent and customized. The multi-material face allows for improved playing characteristics by allowing the club designer to use a thinner face and lighter body material while still providing improved face wear resistance and durability.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2011Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventor: Peter J. Patent number: 8117903Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining the kinematic characteristics of a golf club head are disclosed. The apparatus includes at least one piezoelectric component selectively positioned within or upon a club head. The piezoelectric component is preferably positioned to the rear of the center of gravity, and near the midpoint of the face of the club head. During a golf club swing, the piezoelectric component determines the acceleration and deceleration of the golf club head. When the club head impacts an object such as a golf ball, the piezoelectric component is also operable to determine the velocity of the club head. It may also be desirable for the piezoelectric component to determine the magnitude of vibration during impact. In this manner, the piezoelectric component may function determine the efficiency of a golf club swing.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2009Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Charles Edward Golden, Peter J. Publication number: 20110295609Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method for itemizing pollutants of activities may be provided. The method may include receiving a first quantity of an activity that indicates an amount of the activity that is performed. The method may further include accessing a list of one or more pollutants that are released when the activity is performed. One or more pollutant factors may be selected. Each pollutant factor may be associated with a pollutant of the one or more pollutants and may indicate an amount of the associated pollutant released when the activity is performed. One or more pollutant quantities of the one or more pollutants may be calculated according to the first quantity of the performed activity and the pollutant factor associated with the pollutant. The method may also include facilitating display of the one or more pollutant quantities.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 28, 2010Publication date: December 1, 2011Applicant: COMPUTER ASSOCIATES THINK, INC.Inventors: Janne M.P. Publication number: 20110256960Abstract: An iron-type golf club includes a conventional-weight section, a lightweight section and a heavyweight section. The conventional-weight section includes the hitting face and at least a portion of the hosel. The heavyweight section, made of a denser material than the conventional-weight section, includes the sole and an optional back flange. The lightweight section, made of a material less dense than either of the other sections, includes a core to which the other two sections are secured, such as by co-molding the core to the other two sections. The heavyweight section includes anchoring structures to which the lightweight section can securely attach. This arrangement maintains the overall weight of the club head compared to a similarly proportioned conventional club head while shifting the center of gravity low and aft. As such, the club head provides benefits such as forgiveness for thin shots, heel/toe shots, and provides longer drives with less roll.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2011Publication date: October 20, 2011Inventors: Peter J. Gilbert, David A. Shear

Patent number: 8033927Abstract: The present invention is directed to a number of customized sets of iron-type golf clubs selected from a relatively small number of clubs. The multiple custom-fitted iron sets can be achieved by pivoting these sets off a common 6-iron. In a preferred embodiment, a portfolio of clubs contains seventeen forged iron-type golf clubs, wherein the clubs are a blended collection of oversized cavity back-type clubs, mid-sized clubs, and standard-sized muscle back-type clubs, which can be configured to create at least four custom-fitted iron sets pivoted off a common 6-iron.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2010Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Peter J. Publication number: 20110172023Abstract: A set of iron-type golf clubs includes long, mid- and short irons with channel back configurations and a mass control insert. The mass of the insert is systematically varied through the set such that the mass distribution properties of the set may be systematically varied while retaining a continuous look and feel through the set. The mass of the insert is varied by altering the volume or the density of the insert through the set. Additional design parameters for the set may also be systematically varied through the set, such as groove type and depth, loft angle, cavity volume, hitting face roughness, and sole width. In one embodiment, the mass control insert comprises a dense insert and a lightweight cover. The density of the dense insert can be easily varied to change the mass distribution properties of the club head. One application of the mass control insert is to provide customization of the club head at the point of sale or distribution.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2011Publication date: July 14, 2011Inventors: Peter J.
