    Abstract: A porous ceramic support for a gas separation membrane formed by sintering a green body containing grains of a refractory ceramic oxide with a high coefficient of thermal expansion and grains of a reactive binder precursor. Upon sintering, the reactive binder precursor reacts with at least one gaseous, liquid or solid reactant to create a reaction bond that binds the refractory ceramic oxide grains. The support configuration can be a tubular, flat plate, hollow fiber, or multiple-passageway monolith structure.

The monolith is extruded from a mixture containing at least aluminum metal and alumina powders in a proportion such that on sintering the volume change of the monolith is minimized. The filter body can be used as a filter or as a membrane support for crossflow or dead end flow filter elements. A method for making the filter element is also provided.

    Abstract: A filter assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises, in combination, a housing defining an exhaust gas passage having an inlet end and an outlet end and a cavity intermediate the inlet and outlet ends thereof and in serial fluid communication therewith, the cavity defining an electromagnetically resonant coaxial line waveguide, a filter disposed within the cavity for removing particulate products of combustion from exhaust gases passing through the cavity, and a mechanism for producing axisymmetrically distributed, standing electromagnetic waves within the cavity whereby to couple electromagnetic energy in the waves into lossy material in the cavity to produce heat for incinerating the particulate products of combustion accumulated on the filter.

    Abstract: A cell controlling computer is interfaced to a group of station-level computers through an access machine which stores a database of data that is continually being updated from the station-level computers in response to conditions on machines and industrial process equipment. The access machine communicates with the station-level computers using messages addressed to each respective station. The access machine communicates with the cell controlling computer through database operations messages that allow data to be communicated for many stations at once. During on-line reconfiguration, new data items in the station-level computers can be added to the database in the access machine using other database operations messages.
