  • Patent number: 8462601
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure can provide a method to optimize optical recording. The method can include recording a pre-defined pattern on an optical medium according to a first write strategy, measuring edge timings corresponding to the pre-defined pattern recorded on the optical medium, determining a second write strategy including at least timing modifications to the first write strategy, and recording data on the optical medium according to the second write strategy. The timing modifications can be determined based on the measured edge timings, edge timing targets for desired edge timings and edge timing sensitivities to the timing modifications.

  • Patent number: 8300506
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method, comprising iteratively writing a plurality of test portions to a storage medium sing a corresponding plurality of test parameter sets; iteratively erasing the plurality of test portions from the storage medium using corresponding erase power levels included within the corresponding plurality of test parameter sets and determining an overwrite parameter set for writing user data to the storage medium, the determining based on write performance characteristics of the plurality of test portions after the plurality of test portions have been iteratively erased and rewritten for a predetermined number of iterations.

  • Patent number: 8072862
Abstract: A system includes a sampling module and a correction module. The sampling module is configured to sample an input signal at sampling points and to output samples. The correction module is configured to output a correction factor when the first one of the samples is preceded by a second one of the samples having a first polarity, and when the first one of the samples is followed by a third one of the samples having a second polarity that is opposite of the first polarity. The correction factor comprises a correction value that is based on at least one of the samples that precedes the first one of the samples. The correction value is used to correct the input signal at a first one of the sampling points corresponding to the first one of the samples.

  • Patent number: 8045439
Abstract: A system includes an encoding module and a laser driver module. The encoding module is configured to encode a data stream. The laser driver module is configured to convert the encoded data stream into a write signal including one or more edges. The write signal is output to an optical writer. The laser driver module is configured to adjust an actual position at which the optical writer writes a first edge of the one or more edges on an optical storage medium away from a desired position for the first edge. The adjustment is made based on (i) a first preceding edge position, (ii) a first following edge position, (iii) a second preceding edge position or a second following edge position, and (iv) a third preceding edge position or a third following edge position. The first edge corresponds to a beginning of a mark edge of the write signal.

  • Patent number: 7978589
Abstract: A write analysis system is described for an optical drive, where the optical drive includes an optical storage medium. The write analysis system includes a filter that receives a reflected signal that is based on a reflection of a diffracted laser beam. The reflection of the diffracted laser beam includes a reflection of a first write signal. The filter generates a filtered signal by filtering the first write signal from the diffracted laser beam. The system also includes a read-back module that receives the filtered signal and that compares the filtered signal to a second write signal that was written to the optical storage medium prior to the first write signal.
