Patent number: 5231981Abstract: A control/display assembly for controlling and visually displaying operating conditions/functions of an associated apparatus, e.g., an anesthesia machine. The control/display assembly comprises a panel, e.g., screen, which is arranged to be manually moved and oriented with respect to the apparatus for the user's convenience and a pistol grip having a trigger and a rotary selector member mounted thereon. The pistol grip is arranged to be readily held in the hand of the user to move the panel to the desired position and/or orientation and to hold it stationary while the selector member and trigger are operated. The rotary selector is arranged to be rotated by the thumb of the user to move a cursor on the screen to a desired display/function. The trigger is arranged to be depressed by the user's finger to select a desired display/function.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1991Date of Patent: August 3, 1993Assignee: N.A.D., Inc.Inventors: Peter J. Schreiber, Joachim M. Schreiber

Patent number: 4381774Abstract: A safety system for use in a breathing system of an anesthesia apparatus including a gas supply circuit and re-breathing or counter lung circuit. The safety system includes pneumatically operated switches, battery-powered monitoring circuitry and alarm circuitry. The alarm circuitry is coupled to the monitoring circuitry to provide an alarm signal in the event that gas pressure in the breathing circuit exceeds a threshold level for a predetermined period of time, irrespective of the mode of operation of the apparatus. The pneumatically operated switches are arranged to minimize battery drainage during operation.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1980Date of Patent: May 3, 1983Inventors: Peter J. Schreiber, Joachim G. M. Schreiber

Patent number: 4328823Abstract: In anesthesia apparatus for supplying oxygen and an anesthesia gas through respective flow control valves to a patient breathing circuit an oxygen flow ratio controller is provided. The system includes a restrictor in the pipeline of the oxygen flow control valve and a restrictor in the pipeline of the anesthesia gas flow control valve. The oxygen flow ratio controller includes differential pressure sensing means and anesthesia gas flow control means, the differential pressure sensing means includes a diaphragm assembly responsive to the pressure in the oxygen pipeline and another diaphragm assembly responsive to the pressure in the anesthesia gas pipeline and is coupled to the restrictor pipelines. The anesthesia gas flow control means controls the flow of gas to the anesthesia gas pipeline. The diaphragm assemblies are opposed to each other and are coupled together by a displaceable linkage.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1980Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: N.A.D. Inc.Inventor: Peter J. Schreiber

Patent number: 4307718Abstract: An interlock device for a pair of vaporizers of an anesthesia machine. Each vaporizer includes a rotary dial for establishing the vapor concentration provided. The interlock device insures that one vaporizer is closed whenever the other is open and comprises a pair of reciprocable pins and a cooperating pivotable lever. Each pin is arranged to be extended into a cam recess in the vaporizer dial by the pivoting action of the lever. Rotation of one dial automatically causes the pin located therein to move out of the cam recess and into contact with the lever. This action pivots the lever and causes it to contact the other pin to extend the other pin into the recess in the associated vaporizer dial, thereby locking the dial closed.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1980Date of Patent: December 29, 1981Assignee: N.A.D. Inc.Inventor: Peter J. Schreiber

Patent number: 4191952Abstract: In anesthesia apparatus for supplying oxygen and an anesthesia gas through respective flow control valves to a patient breathing circuit a low oxygen flow alarm system is provided. The alarm system includes a restrictor in the pipeline of the oxygen flow control valve and a restrictor in the pipeline of the anesthesia gas flow control valve. A differential pressure sensing unit including a diaphragm assembly responsive to the pressure in the oxygen pipeline and another diaphragm assembly responsive to the pressure in the anesthesia gas pipeline is coupled to the restrictor pipelines. The diaphragm assemblies are opposed to each other and coupled together by a displaceable linkage. Electrical switch means are provided coupled to the linkage to provide an alarm signal when the linkage has been moved to a predetermined position indicating that the oxygen concentration has dropped below a predetermined value. The differential pressure sensing unit includes spring biasing means.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1978Date of Patent: March 4, 1980Assignee: N.A.D., Inc.Inventors: Peter J. Schreiber, Joachim G. M. Patent number: 4187842Abstract: A pressure monitor for a breathing system is disclosed which includes three switches, each of which is connected to the breathing system and each of which is preset to be changed in state when the switch is connected to a pressure which is in excess of a predetermined threshold pressure. Each of the switches has a different predetermined threshold with the monitor further including signal means, timing means and selector means. The selector means is connected to one of the switches at a time. The timing means is responsive to the one switch connected to the selector and the signal means is connected to the timing means. The signal means is activated by the timing means whenever the system pressure does not exceed the threshold of the switch connected to the selector means within a predetermined time interval. The selector means includes display means for displaying the threshold pressure of the switch connected to the selector means so that the pressure monitored is readily apparent.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1977Date of Patent: February 12, 1980Assignee: N.A.D., Inc.Inventor: Peter J. Schreiber

Patent number: 4069818Abstract: A ventilator is disclosed having a power unit for driving the ventilator which includes fluidic timing control means, gas input means and gas output means. The gas input means is connected to the timing control means via pressure regulating means. Display means are provided responsive to the pressure of the gas which is provided to the timing control means. The timing control means is connected to the output means and is alternately conductive and non-conductive of gas from the input means to the output means. The ratio of the periods of conductivity to non-conductivity remain fixed even where the frequency of alternation varies to maintain a fixed ratio of the inspiratory to expiratory phase time.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1976Date of Patent: January 24, 1978Assignee: N.A.D., Inc.Inventor: Peter J. Schreiber
